Holidays Then Versus Now

Home is where the heart is!

Thanksgiving has come and gone and now families look forward to the end of December to be reunited once again for the holidays. On Thanksgiving this year I sat in a circle with all my cousins who are now 17 and older. We looked at each other and then at the "kid's table" next to us realizing that we used to be the kid's table. It was a crazy moment of nostalgia looking at how far we've come, and how grown up we all are becoming each and every year. There are many differences but also advantages to holidays in your 20's.

1. Everyone grows up with you

If you're from a big family like I am on my mom's side, there are plenty of family members to hang out with on the holidays. The conversations grow from "what was your favorite toy this year?" to "how did your semester go?" The conversations mature but remain endless.

2. People care about your plans

One of the most common yet scariest things to talk about with family on the holidays is your plans for the future. Whether it be the future semester or future job, the members of your family genuinely care how you are liking school and which path you are on your way down during this journey. It's comforting to know that there are people rooting for you outside of your immediate family.

3. It's easier to wait for presents

I remember when I was little and presents were the very last part of our Christmas routine with my dad's family. We would go to church, eat dinner, and save presents for last. I remember the anxiousness and excitement eating at me until my mother would finally say that it was time to open the gifts. Now that I'm older I look forward to seeing my family and coming home for the holidays rather than looking forward to the gifts. Don't get me wrong, presents are a major plus, but not having the luxury of getting to see your family every day outweighs the presents.

4. FOOD YOU DON'T HAVE TO COOK YOURSELF

Do I need to explain?

5. Home is where the heart is

It's true that you don't realize how much you miss something until it's gone. Being away from family and coming back from the holidays is a huge reminder of just how important family is, and how important it is to cherish the time with your loved ones while you have it.

The holidays are one of the happiest times full of family and cheer. Enjoy this upcoming season with your loved ones, and don't forget to remember what is truly important about this time of year.

birthday party

My birthday has never been my favorite holiday. I've found that I'm more excited to celebrate my friends' and family members' birthdays more than my own. I don't like being the center of attention, so I usually celebrate over dinner with a small group of family and friends. This way, I can enjoy myself naturally without feeling like I have to entertain everyone and make sure they are satisfied. In the past when I've had large parties, I was so nervous that people weren't perfectly content that I didn't enjoy myself at my own celebration.

College Informations

Most of us have already started the spring semester, and for those of you who haven't started yet, you suck.

It seems like coming back from winter break wouldn't really be a break all things considered, since we all come back to school and pick up right where we left off. We know exactly what to expect, yet we're unprepared every single time.

I'm serious

There are tons of unisex names that are popular: Taylor, Alex, Bailey, etc. There are also numerous names that are used for both sexes, but they’re not seen as “unisex” yet. People are slowly becoming accustomed to the dual use of these names, but for the most part, in their minds they associate certain names with certain sexes. And that leaves those of us with these names in many awkward situations.

You know that all of these things apply to you. You'll just never tell.

I'm an anthropology major, and I love every minute of it. I couldn't tell you why, but I guess there's just something about studying different lifestyles that absolutely fascinates me. But anthropology majors definitely have our weird sides, especially when you go to a school that is filled with mostly Business and Bio majors. But us weirdos definitely have a lot in common, specifically these 16 things.

pale girl

Everyone has insecurities, that's just a fact. You didn't ask to be born this way. You didn't ask to inherit the one trait no one else in your family has. And you definitely didn't ask to be this ghostly white. But as soon as you've learned to live with it for a while (less wrinkles later on in life, right? right???) someone has to ruin it for you. They have to flaunt they're perfectly tanned body from Spring Break and hold their sun-kissed skin against yours. But I've had enough... here are the things that perpetually pale individuals are tired of hearing.
