Every year around this time, a lot of us wake up with the startling realization that holiday gift shopping is upon us. And, most likely, we haven’t done any, which makes us panic slightly, but for some reason we still put it off. Whether that’s because of said panic, or any other myriad of reasons, we always find ourselves three days before Christmas wondering what we can scavenge from the desert-like conditions of Walmart and Target. So, to start the ball rolling for everyone, I have a few tips!
1.) Start early!
Seriously. Start early. It may be a little late now to constitute as “starting early,” but now is better than Christmas Eve. Plus, if you’re ordering online, especially from Etsy shops, then it’s imperative that you start NOW, especially if the seller is going to have to make the product from the ground up before shipping it to you.
2.) Don’t forget Etsy!
Last year I spent so much time shopping on Etsy for everyone on my list. There is an absolute enormous selection of amazing goods on Etsy, and there’s even an app for mobile phone shopping. I managed to get an awesome custom Xbox One controller and “The Legend of Zelda”-inspired woodburnt trinket box, as well as a cute makeup bag and custom-shaped soap for one of my best friends. However, you need to start shopping and ordering NOW. Both the custom controller and trinket box I ordered took a good 15+ days for the sellers to make, so if you’re hoping to have it by Christmas, definitely start now.
3.) Keep the people you’re shopping for in mind all year, or at least a few months.
Yeah, I know it’s already the end of November and this tip should be handed out at the beginning of January. However, if you have a list of people in mind by October, it can be easier for your mind to meditate on potential gift ideas, especially when you’re “window-shopping” on Amazon, Etsy, or other online marketplaces. Also keep a list of these things you come across. The pre-loaded Notes app on my iPhone is my best friend for so many things, including this.
4.) Keep people’s fandoms in mind.
If you’re struggling to find someone a gift, it’s always a good idea to think about what that person is a fan of. Usually, you’ll be able to find well-priced merchandise for almost any fandom at places like Amazon and Hot Topic, such as Pop! figurines, shirts, and accessories. But, if you want something more unique, as always, check Etsy! You’ll be surprised what you can find on there. I literally have a Lana Del Rey pencil/cosmetic bag that I bought from an Etsy store. Yeah. There’s so much people miss out on.
5.) Buy used!
I don’t know how many stores are left out there that physically sell used goods. I know that I’m personally sad about the Hastings chain of entertainment stores that would buy and sell a large variety of used goods such as books and video games. However, don’t feel pressured to buy people new things, especially if it’s a book or video game! If it’s a chain store, then the video games will likely be thoroughly tested before being re-sold. Furthermore, if a used book is in like-new condition, but much cheaper than a new one, definitely buy the used one! Buying used is not only easy on the wallet, but it’s also easy on the environment.
6.) Most importantly, have fun!
Holiday gift shopping becomes infinitely easier if you loosen up and allow yourself to have fun. Don’t feel like you have to spend a fortune on most people, or find the “perfect gift.” A lot of people always have standbys, where they’re always happy if they get more. (Pillows and blankets are my standbys.) And, most people will be happy that you even thought of getting a gift for them, even if they’re ambivalent about it. The holidays are supposed to be about giving, rather than receiving, and a lot of people understand that. Have fun with your shopping adventure this season, and embrace the spirit of the holidays with open arms!
