6 Things To Remember This Holiday Season

Some thoughts to keep with you.

6 Things To Remember This Holiday Season
Kirk Weisler

Hundreds of thousands of families across the United States are preparing for the holiday season -- filling shopping carts with gifts and fridges with holiday meals. But as you sit down with your families at your respective dinner tables this season, remember that the world doesn't stop turning for anything and that not everyone has the same fortune as you.

1. Half a million kids are still trapped in Syria.

The United Nations just reported that more than half a million children are trapped in the middle of the Syrian Civil War. There are chlorine gas barrels being dropped in the middle of cities and hospitals are being targeted for providing aid to civilians. Not to mention the millions of people starving in cities like eastern Aleppo, where food trucks are being blocked from delivering aid to civilians.

2. ISIS is still a global threat.

As of  September 2016, ISIS/ISIL has carried out or inspired more than 143 attacks in 29 countries not including Syria and Iraq since their official start in 2014. They just bombed a group of Shiites during their annual event, Arbaeen, killing 80.

3. The DRC is about to fall into civil war... Again.

The Democratic Republic of Congo is on the verge of another massive civil war, as President Joseph Kabila is attempting to extend his presidency beyond his term. 40 people died in protests in September attempting to urge Kabila to honor his term limit.

4. Native Americans are still fighting for their land.

"Make America Great Again," am I right? Back to the 1800's we go. Protesters are being targeted with attack dogs and mace. The heavily protested pipeline would not only desecrate sacred Native land, it also threatens the Missouri River should it leak or rupture. Oh, and by the way, Trump owns stock in the company building the Dakota Access Pipeline.

5. Venezuela is still in crisis.

Inflation is predicted to hit 1,700% in 2017 and most business sit a standstill after the government nationalized the majority of the domestic economy. The price of water has skyrocketed so people collect what groundwater they can in bottles to take home to their families. With the country's oil prices continuing to fall, they have no way to improve the economy.

6. Half of the world's population still lives on less than $2.50 a day.

805 million people live without enough food to eat and more than 750 million do not have enough access to safe drinking water.

You may not drive a Maserati or have a 20,000 square foot house, but if your faucet gives you clean water and you sleep surrounded by four walls and a ceiling, you're living another's life of luxury. Give back this holiday season.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
