What Your Favorite Holiday Says About You

'Tis the season to think of holidays.

Many holidays are right around the corner, but for some, our favorites aren't for months. Depending on who you are and what you value, you hold different holidays near and dear to your heart. Find out what your favorite holiday says about you!

1. Halloween.

You love the spooks and the spooks love you! You're all about dressing up and being something different for a change. If you're someone who likes to go out, you enjoy adventure and mischief. If you're not a trick-or-treater, staying in and watching scary movies is comfortable and familiar, even when you're on the edge of your seat. Either way, you've probably drastically overplayed "Spooky Scary Skeletons" well before Halloween season had begun.

2. Thanksgiving.

Family is the most important thing to you, and this holiday is the ultimate excuse to incorporate the next best thing: food. Sitting down with everyone – old, new, close, and distant – is the best gift you could ask for. Even if the dinner gets on the table a bit cold, and your relatives won't stop bothering you about school, relationships, or career paths, the company warms your heart every time.

3. Christmas.

You're either a great gift-giver, or an enthusiastic gift-receiver. Either way, Christmas is a time for you to prove just how well you've been observing your friends and family from afar all year. Whether it's monetary, material, or from the heart, the holiday season is a time of coming together during the coldest time of the year. Just hope Santa didn't see you steal those cookies off his plate.

4. New Year's.

You're looking for a new start and a great party (maybe not in that order). New Year's is a time to reflect on all we have accomplished, and push the things we haven't accomplished back yet another year. Whether you're celebrating in NY Time Square or from the comfort of your own home, ringing in a New Year is a time for you to let go of the past and focus on the future.

5. Your Birthday.

It's all about you and you know it. In fact, you may have turned it into your birth week or birth month at this point. There's nothing wrong with celebrating yourself. Getting together with friends and family or just taking some time for yourself are great ways to celebrate the little things in yet another year of life.

6. Valentine's Day.

You're like me – a romantic. It may not be that you have a significant other to spend the day with, but taking the time to love love is important. Sometimes, we are inclined to let the weight of the world weigh us down, so it's important to take a day and show ourselves, our family, or our partners just how much they mean to us. Also, the color red is pretty.

7. St. Patrick's Day.

You're either Irish or you're going to pretend you are for the night.

8. April Fool's Day.

Jokesters and pranksters unite for this holiday. Most of the population hates being the punchline of a joke, but sometimes we all need a good laugh. Harmless humor is always good fun, but if this is your favorite holiday, you're either the master of practical jokes (in which case I applaud you), or you probably use the holiday as a time to take things too far once a year (in which case I ask you to stop).

9. Mother's / Father's Day.

Mothers and fathers deserve a day of recognition. If you're a parent and this is your favorite holiday – good for you! Embrace your hard work as a model, caretaker, and provider and take a day to yourself. If you're a child and enjoy this holiday, I admire the relationship and admiration you have for your parents and I wish that for everyone.

10. 4th of July.

Though the impact of this holiday is lost on most people, this is the day of celebrating true independence. Although we do so by, for some inexplicable reason, blowing up thousands of dollars worth of fireworks, it truly is a day to appreciate what you have and think of ways to make things better. If this is your favorite holiday, I hope you are doing at least one of those two things.

Of course, there is no correct answer when it comes to favorite holidays. The important thing is that you're spending them - all of them - doing something you love with people that are important to you.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
