As the temperature drops and even a snowball fight is too much, it's time to pop some popcorn and sit down for a good movie. With the holiday season right around the corner, that means lots of old classics and new films will be playing on loop from now until January.
Holiday films add that something extra to the season, and many of us have our own list of films we like to watch this time of year. So in honor of the season of giving, I'm giving you my top holiday films and why I love them.
1. How The Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)
Directed by Ron Howard, this holiday classic features Jim Carrey as the Grinch and a young Taylor Momsen as Cindy Lou Who. While the old cartoon is a classic in itself, Ron Howard's film gave the Grinch more of a backstory, as well a few modern twists. While the Grinch sits up in his cave scowling at the idea of Christmas, little Cindy Lou becomes an unlikely friend to him, as she herself is unsure of what Christmas really means. With hilarious dialogue, memorable characters, and a catchy rendition of "You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch," this film is perfect for everyone, even the Grinch.
2. The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
A Tim Burton classic, this film, while a bit twisted and unusual, gives us a peek at what would happen if Christmas and Halloween were brought together. Also sneaking in a little love story between Jack Skellington and Sally, this movie has laughs, tears, and some spooky surprises. Just make sure you leave Oogie Boogie out of your plans.
3. The Holiday (2006)
Starring Jack Black, Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, and Jude Law, this romantic comedy will leave you in stitches as four people navigate the ever complicated world of love during the holidays. Of course there are a few tear-jerking moments, but the laughs and smiles keep on coming.
4. Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer (2000)
An animated film set to the tune of, you guessed it, "Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer," this movie speaks to the kid in all of us. When young Jake Spankenheimer sees his Grandma get hit by Santa's sleigh on Christmas Eve, he and his family discover she is nowhere to be found. While nobody really believes it was Santa, Jake refuses to give up. With another plot twist involving Cousin Mel, this cute film will have you singing along to catchy tunes. Watch out for reindeer.
5. A Very Brady Christmas (1988)
A sequel to The Brady Bunch television series, this movie reunites most of the original cast, with the exception of Susan Olson (Cindy Brady). Mike and Carol decide to bring everyone home for the holidays, including their kids' spouses and children. But everybody's got something to hide this season, which makes for a rather interesting reunion. Full of laughter and family fun, this movie is a cup of holiday magic. And that's the story.
There are plenty more films, but for me, the holiday season is not complete without these.
