The Holiday Home Tour In The New Orleans Garden District

The Holiday Home Tour is a Christmas tradition down here in New Orleans. This was my first year joining and I was very surprised at the amount of people that attended. New Orleans has some amazing and extremely expensive homes that some of us would only dream of living in. The Holiday Home Tour is most people’s only chance at getting a glimpse at what is inside these fantastic homes. This year was the 41st annual Holiday Home Tour. Year after year they have a different set of houses on the map, so you could go every year and never see the same house twice. Of course, each of these houses was decorated for Christmas, so they are even more spectacular than normal.

Here’s how it works:

  • You purchase your ticket ahead of time or at the door (unless it sells out)
  • You pick up your pre-paid ticket at a central location
    • This is where you receive a list of the houses with a map
  • Then you are free to start your tour at any house on the list

Unlike other tours where the tour travels together as a group, the Holiday Home Tour is more of an individual roaming tour. This means that you are able to stroll from house to house at your own pace. Also, even though it starts at 10 a.m., you can take your time showing up. Personally, I tend to be running late to events like this, so it was a breath of fresh air to be able to show up on my time. Everyone knows the holidays can be crazy, but the Holiday Home Tour is definitely a change of pace in the middle of the madness. Since the tour is from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., you have plenty of time to stroll through each house and do a nice sit down lunch wherever you please. We stopped at GG’s Dine-O-Rama on Magazine Street where I filled up on some classic New Orleans shrimp and grits.

After some much needed lunch, we were ready to finish off the rest of the houses. As you stroll from house to house, there are volunteers that welcome you and provide a small amount of background historical information of each house. Pretty much all of these houses had gorgeous staircases, expensive artwork, islands in the kitchen, and a pool in the courtyard. Personally, my favorite room to inspect was the kitchen. With massive refrigerators and appliances galore, each house had a kitchen that every aspiring dietician dreams to have one day.

The Holiday Home Tour is sponsored by the Preservation Resource Center. This year, there were seven houses to visit and a bonus house at the end. The bonus house was actually a school called McGehee. I was obsessed with the little vegetable garden that the children planted.

Overall, the Holiday Home Tour was very enjoyable. The houses were amazing, the pace was leisurely, and the weather was beautiful. After seeing the collection of houses this year, I can't wait to see the line up for next year!

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

Creating your schedule for the upcoming semester can be an exciting process. You have the control to decide if you want to have class two-days a week or five-days a week. You get to check things off of your requirement checklist. It's an opportunity for a fresh start with new classes (which you tell yourself you'll never skip.) This process, which always starts out so optimistic, can get frustrating really quickly. Here are 25 thoughts you have when registering for classes.

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
