Let the Holiday Season Begin

Yes, it’s November and Thanksgiving us just upon us, but it’s that time of year we mash together as the most festive time of year. Parties, light shows, festivals, shopping. It’s all in the mix and just getting underway now. Everyone needs a little holiday spirit no matter the time of the season. Philadelphia is one of the greatest places to visit for all of your free, fun holiday activities. Each week for the next 6 weeks, I will be featuring a different holiday festival to get you in the spirit of the season. So buckle up and stay tuned as we cruise through the holidays one festival at a time!

Franklin Square Holiday Festival and Electrical Spectacle

Located at the base of the Ben Franklin Bridge, Franklin Square Park is home to the year-round Philly Mini Golf Course, Parx Liberty Carousel, and the Lightning Bolt Express. From November 10th- December 31st, however, the park is transformed into a holiday bazaar with the centerpiece being their Electrical Spectacle. Every half hour from open to close, the park puts on a beautiful light show choreographed to a soundtrack of the Philly Pops Holiday Special. In between shows, guests are welcome to explore the park and all it has to offer.

Square Burger is the resident restaurant with a menu designed by Cooperage. They offer all sorts of burgers, fries and shakes including a Burger of the Month, which is currently an amazing turkey burger with a tomato relish and avocado aioli..yum!, and a Shake of the Month which is, of course, a Candy Cane Shake, perfect for the season!

Another main attraction at the square is Ben’s Sweets and Treats. Inside the heated tent, guests can start their experience by decorating holiday cookies and gingerbread houses.

Next in line is the candy house which offers 35 different old school and new school candies for you to stuff your bag with and enjoy throughout the season. There is also a live fudge-making demonstration and warm donuts available to snack on. The coffee bar offers refreshments for guests to warm up with such as coffee, hot chocolate, eggnog, apple cider and more. On the weekends, Friday-Sunday, the coffee bar offers airplane bottle upgrades to make your drinks and soul just a little warmer. On the same days, the Winter Beer Garden is open and available to all guests over the age of 21. Throughout the season, the Beer Garden will be offering 2 select wines, 6 local draft beers, and 4 seasonal cocktails all provided by Cooperage as well. Guests can enjoy their drinks and treats inside the tent or outside around the fire pits with family and friends.

The Winter Fest is open Sunday to Thursday from 4 pm-8 pm and Friday & Saturday from 4 pm-9 pm. The park is free to enter and all attractions are priced separately.

Every Friday Saturday and Sunday, the Festival has different feature days. Check the schedule to determine what weekend events are most interesting to you and your family.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
