10 Feelings Every College Student Has Going Home For The Holidays Told By 'Mean Girls'

Going home for the holidays can be both an exciting and relaxing time for college students. You have survived the dreaded finals week, you now have a month off from school to relax and do nothing, and you are finally reunited with your family. Below, you will find a list of 10 feelings (almost) every college student will experience when they go home for the holidays. So fetch!

1. When you first arrive home, your family is psyched to have you back

You are showered with attention, hugs, and words of endearment. "We missed you so much!" "You look great!" "We are so excited to have you home!"

2. When your parents make dinner for you, and you realize what good food tastes like again

You realize you won't be forced to eat another packet of Ramen noodles or your college dining hall's disgusting food again for another month. You rejoice.

3. When you quickly make plans with your friends from home, excited to see them after a semester apart

Maybe you'll go to Taco Bell or see a fun movie together. You know you will all spend hours telling stories about how crazy your semesters were.

4. When you get an update on all of the latest hometown gossip

Especially if you live in a small town, you know this to be true. When you arrive home, you know your friends and family will fill you in on all of the newest drama you missed while you were away at school.

5. When your parents try to get you to watch sad Christmas movies with them

And ... you end up crying. Thanks, Mom and Dad.

6. When you hear your favorite holiday jam on the radio

Whether it be "Jingle Bell Rock" (the Plastics' personal favorite) or something else, you know hearing this one special song always puts you in the holiday spirit.

7. When your relatives try to talk to you at a family gathering about your future

"So ... what's your plan for after you graduate college?" Questions like these drive you insane, and you are not in the mood to discuss them, now or ever.

8. When you run into someone you hate from high school

Unfortunately, being home for the holidays doesn't just mean seeing the faces you missed, but also the ones you just ... didn't.

9. When you think about how much money you're going to spend on gifts this year

Your wallet is crying, but you need to make sure everyone has the perfect gift.

10. When you have to dress up for a Christmas party after gorging yourself on a few too many Christmas treats

Sweatpants can be fancy, right? Maybe you should just bedazzle them or something.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
