The holiday season is finally among us, which means people across the country are scrambling to start-- or finish-- their holiday shopping, replacing their seasonal pumpkins with festive wreaths and tinsel and settling in for a few weeks filled with family and friends.
This time of the year is hectic, to say the least, and oftentimes I find myself looking for a way to unwind and beat the holiday stress. Fortunately, for us Rhode Islanders, our tiny state has a lot to offer at this joyous time of year that's family-friendly and guaranteed to leave lasting memories.
Here's a few:
1. The Polar Express Train Ride in Woonsocket, RI.
All aboard the Polar Express! Stop into Woonsocket between November 18th and December 23rd for a 90-minute excursion filled with storytelling, sing-a-longs, games, hot chocolate and a visit from Santa! The train runs Friday's through Sunday's.
2. Christmas at the Newport Mansions in Newport, RI.
Visit the Newport Mansions from November 19th to January 2nd for a special tour of three of the mansions decorated for the holiday season!
3. Ice Skating at the Alex & Ani City Center in Providence, RI.
Whether you're ready to lace up your skates or just sit on the sidelines and watch, ice skating at the Alex & Ani City Center is a great way to spend a night in Providence.
4. Winterfest in Cumberland, RI.
Swing by Diamond Hill Park on a weekend in December with your little ones to search for Santa. The event includes seasonal characters, music, Christmas decor and lights!
5. Trinity Repertory Company's 'A Christmas Carol' in Providence, RI.
Join in on the Rhode Island tradition and see Ebenezer Scrooge and the entire cast of 'A Christmas Carol' at the Chace Theater. The show runs from November 5th to December 31st.
