Your Holiday 2016 Gift Guide

As Thanksgiving break draws closer and closer, it’s time to start thinking about how we’re going to pass our final exams and get our degrees -- just kidding. While that may be true, we all know that the real thing on our minds post-Thanksgiving is Christmas.

Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year, no argument; and with good reason. Christmas is the time of giving, of receiving, and sharing. It’s a time where we let go of all our worries and just enjoy the little moments in life with our friends and family.

As Christmas falls nearer and nearer, it’s also the time to start contemplating the perfect gift for all the special people in your life. This is not an easy task. So many factors come in to play when buying gifts for the loved ones in your life: cost of purchase, the sentimental value of the gift (as compared to the seriousness of your relationship), and the kind of relationship you have with that person.

I’ve taken the time and done the research, and compiled below your all-inclusive 2015 holiday gift guide for all the important people in your life!

A BBQ briefcase. For that father whose first love (after you Mom, of course) is his primped and polished grill, this 20-piece stainless steel BBQ set finished with heat-resistant handles is perfect to satisfy his craving for quality. Get it here.

For Mom.

Jewelry holder. For someone who already has everything, the ideal gift turns in to something beautiful and practical that can hold everything else. That’s when this organizational and simplistic jewelry holder comes into play. Get it here.

For the new boyfriend.

No matter how well you know someone, it’s a universal understanding among members of society, that blankets are always comfortable and always welcome. Choose your new significant other’s favorite sport (or color), and buy him a nice throw pillow to match. Get it here.

For the long-term boyfriend.

Personalized whiskey decanter. When you’ve already spent way too much time together, and you’ve already established your place in each other’s lives, it’s nice to be able to get something really special for your boyfriend. If it’s high quality, personalized, and masculine, it’s a good idea. Get it here.

For your brother.

Bottle cap map. Whether you choose the U.S. map or your state map, the bottle cap map is a charming and neat way for you brother to keep a record of his favorite beers in a masculine physical display ('cause you know he won't do it otherwise). Get it here.

For your sister.

Travel tumbler. Because you know she’s always down for a pick me up, you’re the best person there to provide it with a creative and charming travel tumbler. It’s a sweet gesture from someone special in her life to be there with the little things. Get it here.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
