For some people, Fall means breaking out sweaters, getting pumped for Halloween and Thanksgiving, or preparing for Winter. But for a very special type of people, the beginning of Fall means the beginning of a more important season: hockey season. Hockey is so much more than watching a volcanized piece of rubber get passed between burly men on skates. It's about teamwork, passion, and the excitement that strings along with each game. This excitement derives from toothless smiles, long-brewing fights, Wednesday Night Rivalries, and the fast-paced, heart-racing love of the game. If you're unsure of how this whole hockey thing works, have no fear! This handy dandy list of lingo will help you learn everything you need to know to be a hockey pro.

1. Barn:

Simply a rink or arena. This is where the game is played.

2. Biscuit:

AKA the puck; made of vulcanized rubber and serves as the "ball" of the sport.

3. Celly:

A brief, celebratory (celly-bratory) move after scoring a goal. Can look like any of the above and more.

4. Goon:

a player who's best asset is fighting. And, as any true fan knows, hockey is nothing without a good fight.

5. Flow:

Referring to a player's hair when it becomes longer than the limits of their helmet.

6. Mitts:

Refers to the gloves worn by the players. "The gloves are off" is a common indication from the announcer that a fight has broken out on the ice.

7. Saucer:

A type of pass that is glides through the air and ends up on the blade of a teammate's stick.

8. Snipe:

More than just a term for gunslingers, but still defining a perfect shot; in this case, one that glides into the net effortlessly after either sneaking between the goalies legs or hitting pole before entering the net.

9. Sweater:

of course, this refers to a hockey jersey. What would be a more appropriate name for the jerseys worn in the world's coldest sport?

10. Twig:

The stick, although nowadays most aren't made of wood to support the nickname.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
