Golf is a game based on acute detail. Having the correct mechanics helps you play more consistent and hit a better ball. Below you will read up on 5 tips to help improve your set up, which will help you hit the ball straight and more consistent.
1. Grip
A golfers grip, believe it or not, is one of key components to hitting a better ball. When you look down at your hands on your club, your hands should be fairly straight. One should be able to roughly see the first two knuckles on their top hand (shown above). When your hands and arms form a "V" pointing to your back shoulder you'll know this is correct. With a firm grip and your top knuckles showing, this assures our club will not be rotating through our swing.
2. Aim
Gold is definitely a game of persistent shots. When you set up to your ball it is crucial to pick a target to aim for. When you find that target, line the fact of your club with what you're aiming for. Make sure while lining our club up to the ball that the face of the club is square. A square face will help keep the ball where you aimed and help us hit the ball as straight as possible. When we do this the rest of our body will follow suit with our stance and alignment. Having a target helps you have a mental picture for where you want your ball to go.
3. Stance
Every golfer has a different stance, but it's important to make sure we have an athletic one.The key is to make sure that your knees are bent, but not too much. Over-bending your knees can cause a golfer to hit the ground before they should. When looking down, our knees should be bent about halfway down the length of your feet. Along with our bent knees, one needs to make sure their back is kept straight even though their body is slightly slanted forward.
4. Alignment
Aiming the ball is only half the battle. Your feet and body need to be aligned correctly. After you figure out where you are going to aim, your body also needs to be aligned. An easy way to match your alignment with your aim is to place your club along your waist. Your club should be pointing to where you aimed and if not, you adjust your body until it meets your target. Along with your body, your feet need to be aligned the same way as well.
5. Position of the ball
Many golfers struggle with ball position which can really hurt a golfers chance at hitting more consistent and solid shots. A big mistake most golfers amake is placing the ball too far back in their stance. Placing the toward the back of your stance can cause one to not only skull the ball, or hit a line drive, but slive it. The reason for this is the club is meeting the ball too early. When we catch the ball too early in our swing, our club head will still be opposed to square. That open club-face puts an inside-out spin on the ball causing a "righty" player to hit the ball left, and vice versa.
To fix this easy mistake made by so many, golfers should learn to play the ball more up in their stance. For instance, when hitting our driver or other woods, the ball position should be at our front foot. We will place the ball in the middle or even front middle, just to be sage, when hitting our irons. Moving your ball position forward a little will increase your chances at more solid and consistent contact.
