Fans of the hit game Overwatch recently learned that the female mascot, named Tracer, is a lesbian! This was revealed in an official comic released by Blizzard Entertainment, which depicted a scene between Tracer and her girlfriend, Emily. The comic shows Tracer giving Emily a scarf and receiving a kiss in return!
Some are taking this news very hard. In fact, the comic was banned in Russia and labeled "gay propaganda." Others do not see the importance of revealing a character as gay. However, the introduction of a homosexual character in this game is an incredible step in the right direction!
It is really important for young LGBTQ+ people to have characters that they can relate to. As a young girl, I thought about the possibility of "liking boys and girls" but I dismissed it because I didn't think it was possible. This is the case for plenty of children. Because of this, they spend their lives believing that something is wrong with them. However, by being exposed to characters that they can relate to, they can feel normal. Additionally, it would help straight children to understand the LGBTQ+ community.
I truly hope that more LGBTQ+ characters are introduced, like Tracer. I know it made my little sister happy, and I'm sure it made a variety of people happy as well. Needless to say, it was an excellent holiday gift from Blizzard Entertainment, and hopefully more games will follow the trend.
