Dogs are the best things this world has to offer. Quite clearly, we do not deserve dogs. These furry innocent angels make even the dullest day brighter. The happiest of the dog breeds are the pugs. Some find them to resemble a pig more so than a dog yet that is what makes them so unique. A popular trend now, people are beginning to realize these little aliens are the perfect pick. Pugs are the best breed if you want a buddy whom will not only be a dog but also a best friend which will always make you smile.
Many are unaware of the rich history surrounding pugs. Originating in Imperial China around 1500, pugs have been favorites of many royals around the world for hundreds of years. As the pug began dominating the world it also gained powerful owners. In Holland, around 1572, William Prince of Orange delegated the pug to be the house. It can be noted that William believes that his pug warned him of the Spaniards resulting in it saving his life.
Later on, in 1700, the first black pug was painted by William Hogarth. Then, in the 1750's, as young women before becoming married Marie Antoinette and Josephine Bonaparte each owned pugs as companions. Notably, Josephine’s pug was the only “visitor” allowed to see her once she was taken to jail. Some historians note that she and her family would communicate by letters her pug carried.
Another powerful European woman who housed a pug was Queen Victoria. Such infatuation with pugs did not take over in the United States until after the Civil War. Meaning that the American Kennel Club did not recognize the pug as an official breed until nearly 500 years later in 1885.
Physically, they are built with a small yet bulky stature topped and a corkscrew tail. A full face of wrinkles, velvet ears, and signature bug eyes on their flat faces give them the comparison to an alien. These small dogs are a compact 14-20 lbs.
Traditionally pugs are available in two colors: fawn (tan) and black. However, more rare colors such as apricot and silver can be found from special breeders. This hair will wind up coating everyone and everything in the room. So, regular brushing will make cleaning much more bearable. The short hair means that haircuts are never needed, just brushing.
Personality wise, the pug is the clown of the dogs. Sometimes stubborn, these little bundles of joy will always leave you laughing. They are a people’s dog and want to be the center of attention. Easy-going and friendly, they are a common pick for families. When barking, the noise is more of a muffled noise followed by snorting. Not ideal for sports and heat, pugs just want to cuddle and eat. Eating is a pug’s favorite activity. Nevertheless, they tend to be very greedy eaters and often times are obese.
If you are looking for a low maintenance side-kick, a pug could be in your future. Their small, low energy traits make them a match for nearly any owner. With a calm and fun personality, a pug gets along with people of all ages. Overall, everyone loves a pug, and a pug loves everyone.
