Music is everywhere. You might be driving and the radio may be blasting the different genres of music or you’re walking down the streets and hear a band playing some tunes. You see everyone going to music festivals, concerts and even productions but not really taking into account that it is perceived as something so ordinary but is beyond extraordinary. There are different types of music for everyone, from alternative to rap to country and much, much more. Depending on the events and circumstances, the music seems to change as well from season to season, bringing in holiday tunes along with the simply overplayed songs on the radio. It has been found in every culture varying between places and time in different languages.

How did music honestly even originate? It is definitely hard to spot out one time where someone had an aha moment as to what music really was because honestly, it has been here since the beginning of time. The human voice was what was mainly displayed as a musical aspect in the early beginnings of time where making rhythmic sounds and vocals including humming, clicking and whistling was the primary signs of music.

With the music, there is acapella and/or one that involves some sort of a musical instrument. The first musical instrument dates back to Paleolithic times where clapping hands, hitting stones or other objects together was the background music that involved rhythm and tempo. According to some archaeological findings, more music was made during the era when stones tools were introduced and utilized frequently by people. By using the stone tools, people were pounding and beating the stones together that created several types of unique rhythmic beats at the time.

Some choose to believe and relate to the more scientific view of how it all began. Their belief consists of our distant ancestors utilizing sounds in forms of another way of communication. Others believe that even animals, such as monkeys, could have had some sort of an involvement to the creation of music due to their distinguishable sound patterns that are similar to differentiating types of melodies in songs.

Either way, music has been consistently current in our lives which accounts for types of nonverbal communications we have and the feelings that encompass within us when we hear the music. Songs are structured to bring some kind of purpose whether it is enjoyment, empathizing, or even just melodically pleasing. Artists we have not even met in person can display their emotions into their vocals and the lyrics which make the world feel relatable, showing us that we’re all capable of feeling the same way at different points in our lives. Whether or not we specifically find a time where music was created, it will always be an immense part in our lives, truly giving us time to appreciate the beauty of music.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
