Hipster School Supply List: Election Year Edition

If you’re a glass-half-full kind of person, the beginning of August is the start of the last month of summer; if your glass is half-empty, August 1st marks the beginning of the end - the countdown begins until school is back in session. We may not want to be reminded that fall is just around the corner any more than we want to acknowledge Donald Trump’s candidacy, but the sad truth is that we must. And if we must recognize these fateful truths, then we may as well get a good laugh out of it all.

Last week #HipsterSchoolSuppliesList was trending on Twitter, so I’ve browsed the internet and compiled a list of some items that your favorite hipster might appreciate this election season.

College isn’t college without drinking games (sorry mom). Although hipsters may think beer pong and flip cup are lame, here are a few games they might find interest in:

MJOM Cards created a card game called “Top Trump” where you can pit start-up against start-up. The object of the game is to collect all the cards...figures.

And from the makers of Pocket Pal, we introduce Pocket Trump: a 20-sided conversational dice that’s kinda like a Magic 8 Ball. Alone it's not really a game, but with the imagination of a hipster combined with the power of alcohol I have faith that someone could turn this into a game.

But those clever game designers didn’t stop with Trump. No, for the feminists (and democrats) out there, they’ve designed the Woman Card[s] - which is a “badass deck of playing cards featuring American women who changed the world” according to the creators.

So we have entertainment, but how about dorm decor? Hipsters look for something much less basic and much more unique than sorority letters or movie posters, so this year consider some of these decorations, starting with bumper stickers.

This sticker just about sums up how many people feel about the 2016 election. Will you be casting a vote for the Giant Meteor? If you or a friend are looking into this candidate, this would make the perfect laptop sticker and conversation starter for the upcoming semester.

Nothing says Home Sweet Home quite like an embroidered throw pillow. The pillow pictured above is from Hillary's own campaign website, and it's a perfect statement piece - one that makes a social statement every time someone sits on your sofa.

Now this is a true masterpiece. The Trump Chia Pet (also available in Bernie, Hillary, Barack and Happy Barack on Amazon) can act as a door stopper, paper weight, secutriy system, and literally anything else you can imagine.

Finally, you can't go back to school without some fresh threads, so consider supporting (or mocking) a candidate with your wardrobe. Hillary's campaign portrays her in a more relatable light than Trump, and this could be due to the silly nature of some of her campaign items. You've seen the throw pillow she's selling, but check these two shirts out:

This is the Everyday Pantsuit Tee, which is one step up from your typical tuxedo tee and perfect for your hipster needs. Clearly, this shirt is unisex and screams "I want to be formal, but I'm here to party. And support Hillary."

And if this shirt doesn't do it for you, how about this one:

Yaaas, Hillary, yaaas.

And while hipsters may not sport Trump's "Make America Great Again" clothing line- not because it's Trump, but because they have a sense of style- some Zazzle designer kept the hipsters in mind when creating these:

White on White seems to fit Trump's campaign best, but if that's not your style don't worry - the hats come in many other colors than the one pictured here.

As for this shirt, the message is clear: don't. Just don't.

The possibilities are endless when it comes to political knick-knacks available on the internet, especially during an election year. Be prepared for Trump vs Hillary debates when you head back to school, but be equally prepared to see these items floating around from your peers' #HipsterSchoolSupplyLists. So who will the winner of the 2016 election be?

We'll find out November 8th..

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
