The Hippodrome Theatre is asking locals to help clean out their closet this weekend for the first time in nearly a decade.
With over 200 guests expected in attendance, The Hippodrome Costume Sale Extravaganza from Sept. 17-18 provides an opportunity for shoppers to purchase award winning costumes of every budget and style that have served as the foundation of eight years of performances.
After having so much success in 2010, it took us six years to rebuild our collection to the extent that we would have enough inventory for another costume sale,” said Stacie Danahy, the Director of Public Programs.
The collection isn’t limited to costumes. The inventory includes one-of-a-kind pieces of art that have been created by hippodrome costume artists, from all times periods. There will be masks, wigs, shoes, and accessories, as well as, vintage pieces that can be worn by a collector or fashionsita. The sale will also feature limited edition pieces, such as fun capes, donated mink coats, and a giant, which have been accumulating over the past 40 years of productions.
“As Gainesville’s only professional theatre, this is an event you don’t want to miss,” said Danahy.
The costumes will range from $10 and up. Doors will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, September 16th, and 12 p.m to 4 p.m. on Sunday, the 17th, at the Hippodrome Theatre in Downtown Gainesville, 25 SE 2nd Place.
“Our hope is to provide a unique shopping experience our community can take advantage of,” said Stacie Danahy, the Hippodrome’s Director of Public Programs. “That is our number one goal.”
Proceeds from the sale will help the Hippodrome continue to serve the North Central Florida community with mainstage and cinema programming, charitable events, reduced price tickets and student focused camp scholarships and education programs.
There’s so much joy that comes with playing a character and we are excited to give our community that chance to be inventive and creative,” Danahy said.
