When people look at me and try to guess what my favorite type of music is, they usually say I'm all about pop and am obsessed with Miley Cyrus or Katy Perry. Or, they say I'm an all out country girl, who swoons over Kenny Chesney and Sam Hunt. No, that's not it at all. I do find songs in both of those genres catchy. However, unexpectedly, I'm all about hip-hop, and here are four reasons why.
1. Hip-hop music always has a great beat.
It's always bumpin' and grindin' and makes great party music. When was the last time you were at a college party and heard them blasting a slow Lana Del Rey song? It's so much fun and easy to dance to. Not to mention, when you're driving on a long car trip, it keeps you awake and energized.
2. Hip-hop music never makes me overly emotional, or emotional at all at that.
Not that I don't want to show my emotions, but when I get upset or angry about something, I don't want to drown myself in a sad Luke Bryan or Taylor Swift song.
3. The rhyming in the lyrics are entertaining and interesting.
Though many may disagree, I find the ideas rappers come up with for their verses clever. Their messages may not always be pure and modest, and I admit some of Lil Wayne's comparisons in his raps are dumb, but others are just downright genius. There's no way I could ever be that creative and listening to what they're going to come up with next is intriguing.
4. Hip-hop artists are AWESOME.
My favorite hip-hop artist will always be (and my heart will always belong to) Drake. He may be seen as just a mushy, way too sensitive, hopeless romantic, but many have forgotten he became successful as a recording artist through a small role on television. Many kids today may not remember the show, "Degrassi." Drake, also known as Aubrey Graham, played Jimmy. He was discovered simply for rapping on the show, and landed a career. He's one of the most successful artists for only being in his twenties.
Not only is he dedicated to his work, but Drake also has a great voice. No matter the technology we have today, nobody wants to listen to your song if your voice sounds like nails on a chalkboard. Many hip-hop songs sound great because of the artist's voice. Not only Drake's, but Future, Big Sean and Kanye West all have real singing talents.
Overall, in case you couldn't guess by now, most of my music libraries are hip-hop. It's funny seeing people's reactions when I play it or (attempt to) rap along or know the words. I'm pretty sure I'll be that mom dropping my kids off at school with "trap music" bumping so loudly, it shakes the car's mirrors, and be patiently waiting for Drake to drop his latest single.
