I’m with her. I support Hillary Clinton wholeheartedly. However, I was really disappointed with her comment on Nancy Reagan and Ronald Reagan’s supposed dedication to spreading awareness about the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the 1980s.
Hillary Clinton is so severely scrutinized, judged in the media and targeted by Bernie Sanders supporters (who are sometimes quicker to attack her than some conservatives) that I often feel like I am one of the few who defends her. I have supported her despite it being an unpopular opinion among college students. I will continue to support her and vote for her. However, I feel as though the comment she made is inexcusable.
I have always been concerned about the AIDS epidemic. My mother lost many of her closest and dearest friends to the disease. I grew up hearing stories about her wonderful, creative, young and intelligent friends who passed away too soon because of this horrible illness. There was no discussion about this illness. It was distasteful to talk about what was then referred to as the “gay cancer.”
You would think that if so many young people were dying from this illness in the United States of America, the president - no matter how conservative and religious - would at least raise awareness among the public about safe sex, and the rapid spread of a terminal illness. The situation verged on genocide. It was a way in which the president and the first lady not only were able to sweep this epidemic under the rug but could simultaneously allow millions to die.
Therefore, while I think Hillary Clinton is a strong, smart and pragmatic person, I believe that she made a thoughtless comment. However, I also don’t think that this is representative of her opinions on the AIDS epidemic in relation to the Reagans. I also do not believe that it is representative of her actions and how active she would be if there would be another similar epidemic.
She herself stated that “As First Lady, I brought together world leaders to strategize and coordinate efforts to take on HIV and AIDS around the world. In the Senate, I put forward legislation to expand global AIDS research and assistance and to increase prevention and education, and I proudly voted for the creation of PEPFAR and to defend and protect the Ryan White Act.”
So while Bernie supporters and select hardcore republicans might take this as an opportunity to further take her apart in an inhuman and truly harsh fashion, I take it as a mistake that she has made (which human beings often do) and I believe that she has taken good action to apologize and explain the importance of the falsity and inaccuracy in her remark.
