After driving by Mount Yonah several times on my way up to visit a friend, this week I decided to give it a try. I must warn you, this hike is quite strenuous and can take several hours to reach the peak. Pleasepack a protein filled snack and plenty of water.
“We are now in the mountains and they are in us, kindling enthusiasm, making every nerve quiver, filling every pore and cell of us.”— John Muir
The mountain lies nestled in the Chattahoochee National Forest near the southern end of the Appalachian Mountains about 20 minutes from Cleveland, Georgia. With its stunning granite exposed peak towering over the forest below, it's no wonder Mount Yonah is a prime spot for both avid backpackers and day hikers. Be cautious driving up to the trail head; the road is mostly clay and rather uneven, making is a bit of a hazard for cars without great traction (like mine) and can become muddy during heavy rains.
The hike itself is around 4.4 miles round trip with several side trails branching off to different hikes, including the climbing routes where brave hikers can scale the rocky mountain side. Those with weak ankles beware. The trail takes you up and over a series of large boulders. About halfway to the peak of Mount Yonah is a large patch of grass known as the "staging area" with a few primitive campsites and a breathtaking view of the neighboring mountains.
This is the perfect spot to refuel, because it only gets steeper from here. The hike continues its incline, leading to a gravel road a short way up. Here you can sometimes run into a platoon on an army training exercise, so please be polite and try not to disturb them. Once you make it past the clearing, you're almost there! Sort of.
There will be a fork in the trail, take the path on the left to reach the peak. The other path leads to another spot for climbing.
The end of the trail leads into another open field, and another primitive campsite! This spot offers an uninterrupted view of the sky, making it a perfect star gazing spot or a chance to admire a lunar eclipse. Set up your tent in the field, but keep the campfire on the granite.
The iconic granite overlook lies just beyond the field, but please approach with extreme caution and use proper judgement before attempting to settle in. There is a steep and rapid drop down the side of the mountain, and people have fallen to their death.
That being said, the view is spectacular. It is one I won't forget anytime soon. Take a moment to soak in the accomplishment, and reward yourself with a snack.
Mount Yonah is beautiful and worth the ache in your legs the next day. Be sure to dress appropriately for the season (include hiking boots), bring plenty of water and as always hikers, leave no trace! I'll see you on the trails!
