I knew in sixth grade that I wanted to be her friend. We shared the same name and I thought it would be really cool to be friends. I went up to her and introduced myself saying, “Hi! My name is Bridget too! We should be friends!” It wasn’t as well received as I’d hoped and we still laugh about it today. She thought I was crazy, which rightfully I am, and we ended up not becoming friends. Once we got to high school, the only two Bridget’s in our grade, were placed in the same homeroom, 2011-A. This is where it all began!
We had lots of memories that happened seeing each other 16 minutes every day for four years. Not only do we both have the same name, but we share the same favorite color, the number 28, our love for Batman, and so much more. We dubbed homeroom “banana homeroom” and we’d share horoscopes every morning. We even dubbed each other nicknames after working the golf shuttle parking lot, Golden Eagle & Black Bird.
When it came time for our senior year, we had a lot to accomplish! We participated in our senior prank together, we had Cupcake Fridays and we went on our senior trip together too. Luckily, the senior trip to the Phillies game turned into our own little tradition when we’re both home. Once we settled on our colleges, everything became so real. Bridget was heading to Michigan State and I was attending East Stroudsburg. We then walked across the stage and together we laughed in the front row about the “Cars” reference and became saddened by the fact that we’d be 600 miles apart in a few weeks.
We Skyped almost every night the first year. I still have some of the drunken voicemails left on my phone that when I need a really good laugh, I play them. We used to bombard each other’s Facebook walls with pictures and images that we thought each other would like. We’ve worked together in hell that first summer home from school, as the two palest people, placed outside in the sweltering heat without any sunscreen. We’ve supported each other through everything and we look forward to the brunches we can have whilst home, which are slowly becoming fewer and farther in between. We’ve found a way to mesh our two completely separate lives together. We have much of our lives ahead of us and I cannot wait to stand together through the twists and turns that life throws at us. I love talking about the future, showing how much uncertainty there is. Usually, once people graduate high school, it’s realized that the only reason you were friends with some was just because you spent every day with them. Most of my friends from high school have proven that right. However, I’m so completely elated that this is not the case with her. I look forward to the late-night texts and phone calls, just because. We’ve done nothing, but grow into better individuals together and I cannot wait to see what our future holds for us!
