I don’t think there is a set purpose of higher education.
Education will always be what one makes of it. However, higher education does strongly lay its foundation on instilling in students a drive to grow, learn, and make an impact on the world. Not everyone has access to the best means of education, and higher education is no guarantee to a successful life and career. Higher education will never guarantee a job or future success, and it’s the reality of the world we live in. Albeit higher education doesn’t give any set assurances, it does inculcate in students something that will stay with them forever. It gives students opportunities, teaches them that they need to be constantly growing, and tells students to pursue their passions wherever they might lead.
Education isn’t merely what is taught in textbooks and in lectures. I’m not going to be able to utilize every skill or knowledge I learn in my classes, and that’s just how it is. It’s about the character and life skills one grasps a hold of in the educational setting. In the setting of higher education many people figure out who they want to be, and the education system tends to show them how they can do that. Higher education gives its students opportunities that they certainly could never have gotten elsewhere. It gives them connections and resources they can use to further their career and use to change the world. Without a doubt, higher education provides beneficial aid to its students.
Higher education is beneficial in ways, but it also is flawed. There is such a high price put on higher education, and it suggests that only certain people are deserving of the opportunities it provides. Higher education does truly positively impact many lives, but it isn’t as accessible and equal opportunity as many portray it to be. Everything is constantly changing and can be bettered, and I believe that to be the case with higher education.
Those that are intelligent with great potential often aren’t able to go to great colleges that they’re accepted into simply based on their financial state. Yes, there are many programs put in place to help students afford college, but many students are on the brink of being eligible for those opportunities, putting them at a disadvantage. The system cannot help everyone and that is understandable but that still makes the system flawed. I believe that higher education has the power and capability to dramatically influence people into changing the world for the better, but for that to happen there first needs to be a way to make that influence have a greater reach.
At the end of the day, education will always be what one makes of it. One can receive an outstanding education from a top-notch school, but if they don’t take advantage of the opportunities that are provided, that education is wasted. You reap what you sow, so if you put the time and effort into your education something great can come from it. I believe a higher education isn’t necessarily needed to achieve great feats, but it does jumpstart the process. A higher education provides opportunities and knowledge, but at the end of the day, it is what you make of it. Education doesn’t decide one’s fate, for that is up for one to decide.
