The most recent ridiculous dress-code violation occurred in a Florida high school, where a student named Lizzy Martinez was told to put Band-Aids over her nipples when she showed up braless to school.
The school said in an interview that her nipples were making teachers and male students uncomfortable, and this is why she was asked to cover them up.
The first thing that I would like to address is the school’s statement is the idea of discomfort.
Guess what, y’all? BRAS MAKE WOMEN UNCOMFORTABLE, PHYSICALLY.
So female students should have to compromise their physical comfort so that male students and teachers can concentrate in class?
This leads to my next point. Why are female nipples so exceptionally distracting?
Martinez herself retweeted the following post: “How about we just stop stigmatizing the female body and teach our children to respect everyone regardless of their appearance?” (@alxnakelly)
And I have to say, I agree.
The fact that little girls are taught to be ashamed of their bodies and little boys are never taught to NOT objectify the female body is absolutely appalling. This is not the first time a story about women being punished for distracting men has made the news. Why is the school a place of comfort for male students and a place of shame for female students?
Maybe this is an issue we should address as a society, rather than writing a dress-code violation for every girl who shows her body in a way that is considered promiscuous and distracting in a school setting. Maybe school administrators should address the disgusting double standard.
