Kindergarteners with an 8:00 p.m. bedtime get the opportunity to rest during the school day, so why don’t high schoolers? The high schoolers, who stay up into the night to succeed in their rigorous courses, struggle to keep their eyes open during critical exams, whereas elementary schoolers are always well-rested for school days full of fun!
School is not the largest cause of sleep deprivation; immense pressure to become a well-rounded student who is involved in every extracurricular under the sun fills their already jam-packed schedules.
So why not give these hardworking students the time to rest during the day? A mental and physical break from the burdens of high school would improve a student’s efficiency, work ethic and health, leading to higher achievements and success rates.
While some students may not sleep during this time, they could use the free hour to study and catch up on homework, leaving time for their millions of extracurriculars in the evenings. Athletes would greatly benefit from this opportunity because they will have ample time for their games and practices, and their homework stress would lighten. They may even be able to sleep early so they are well-rested and win games. Students with after-school jobs won't have to stress about the mountain of homework they have to start when they get home at 10:00.High schoolers are clearly deserving of such a privilege, so why is it only the little ones that get to bask in these luxuries?
