Big schools are often credited for their incredible spirit and die-hard students who give their all at school events. Although these big schools do deserve the recognition they receive, there isn't much that compares to being a small town high school student with a whole lot of school spirit.
One of the best parts about going to a small high school that cranks up the spirit is the fact that your whole grade is basically one big family. When your class size is smaller than 100 students, everybody knows everybody, and you build special connections with your classmates. Therefore it becomes incredibly easy to get big groups together to show off your school spirit. When homecoming games, spirit weeks, powder-puff games and everything in between comes up, you've got a great group of friends to get involved with. And- when you've got great friends, you have everything.
Along with being heavily involved in events, going to a small school means that every event is a big event. There's a reason to celebrate every game during every season of the year. Whether you're a player or a teammate, you feel involved and you feel the need to celebrate it. As a player, you proudly sport your jersey during the school day, and when you're out on the court, or on the field, you find comfort in the guarantee that when you look out to the home crowd, you'll see at least one of your close friends. As a spectator, you have no problem showing your pride in your home teams. Whether that be with signs for your team, face-paint, or cheers from the crowd, you take every opportunity you can to show your support for the home team. And- if worst comes to worst and your small town team isn't victorious, you know it isn't the end of the world, and the spectators and players can come together and hype up the spirit for the next game.
While going to a small school means the students get hyped up about anything, it also means that the community is greatly involved in the school. The community members attend all home games, and concerts, they watch us parade around the town during homecoming week, and they're willing to help out in any way possible, whether that be assisting in fundraisers, or simply providing their support. Seeing an entire town come together, students, teachers, and community members is something you'll never forget.
Lastly, when you attend a small high school, good things are great things. The smallest good thing that happens makes everyone happy, and the atmosphere in a small high school after winning a game, placing at a tournament, performing well in a concert, or putting on a good show is so incredibly positive, anyone can feel it. The winners are congratulated and the smiles on the students' faces last a long time. There is so much satisfaction in coming together as one and using the small school size to embody big spirit.
