6 Things I've Gained From A High School Soccer Experience

What the past years have brought me

6 Things I've Gained From A High School Soccer Experience

I have been playing soccer since I was 4 years old. Going between clubs such as LOFS Rec League, to travel league, to club teams, indoor, and finally to high school. Comparing all of those experiences and journeys together, high school is like no other.

1. You spend months together

For high school, we start our summer conditioning in June, the week after school lets out. We go two days a week for two hours at a time. However, when July hits, it becomes 3-4 days. At the end of July, we have a “Hell Week”, which is a week of 5 hour practices, and straight up conditioning for all of it. When August hits, you start scrimmages between local school, and then finally you find out what team you’re on, and get your uniform and team pictures taken. Finally, it’s season time. We play every Tuesday and Thursday with the occasional Saturday tournaments until early October, that’s when postseason starts with Sectionals start.

2. Pasta Dinners

Before every big game, a certain class on the team hosts a “Pasta Party” where the kids and parents bring a bunch of patas, breadsticks, desserts, chocolate milk, and water to fill us up in preparation for the big game that is to come. But no class every goes before the seniors, it is considered disrespectful.

3. Team Bondings

The teams set up out of school/out of practice time to spend together. We all get along really well, and we spend a lot of time together. We develop close friendships like no other and enjoy hanging out outside our passionate sport.

4. Team Sleepover

Every year both teams combine for a giant team sleep over. We all spend all night together watching movies, eating, and doing team bonding exercises.

5. Senior Night

Our last home game of the season, all underclassmen honor our seniors with them being lead by their parents onto the field, where we give them a bag of gifts and a rose. A speech is made about them by our head coach, and everyone cheers for them. We make pamphlets with their soccer stories and background with throwback pictures to remember their past years in the sport. Finally, we all eat a giant dinner after together.

6. New Friendships

All of us are there for one reason and one reason only; to play the game we love. We spend so much time together, and well develop friendships through it all. We have inside jokes, laughs, and funny memories. I personally have made some very close friends over the years through ut, and I wouldn’t trade any of it for the world.

High school soccer has brought me a lot of memories so far, but I’m not done yet. I’m excited for what lies ahead and cannot wait for my senior year.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
