An Open Letter To High School Seniors

Don't let your senioritis take over you.

The majority of you probably have senioritis right now and are eager to take the next step towards your future. I don't blame you at all. College is an amazing experience where you learn more about yourself and the world around you. You become fully responsible for yourself and have more freedom than you ever did when you were in high school. Although college is pretty great, don't be so quick with wanting your high school career to end because there are countless things that you will miss.

1. Playing high school sports.

You'll miss your teammates and your coach. You'll miss the feeling of wearing your jersey and being called by your number. Even if you are going to play a sport in college, nothing will compare to your high school team. Cherish the wins and even the losses. Work as hard as you can at every practice. Play each game like it'll be your last because one day, it really will be.

2. Seeing your friends every day.

You will definitely make new friends in college and they'll be awesome. Hanging out whenever you want and experiencing independence together. But you will miss your high school friends and the memories you made. You'll miss talking to them every day and sharing your inside jokes. Make sure to appreciate the friends you have now, because in the future, as sad as it is, you may not be as close as you once were.

3. Home cooked meals.

Pizzas and cafeteria food just don't compare to your dad's grilled burgers. Some of the things in the cafeteria don't even look edible. I know that it's tempting to skip dinner with your family for work, or sports, or even to hang out with other people. But don't take home cooked meals for granted. Next year, you'll sit in the cafeteria with a plate of food that neither looks or tastes good.

4. Your family.

Though they may get on your nerves time after time, once you stop seeing them every day, you really start to miss them. Skyping and calling help with missing them, but it's not nearly the same as living with them 24/7 like you do when you're in high school. Don't skip out on family events because once you get to college, you won't get the chance to go to all of them.

5. Your pets.

The only animals you're allowed to have in your dorms are fish. While fishes are still pretty cool, nothing compares to your pets at home. You'll miss waking up and seeing them every morning and constantly wonder if they miss you like you miss them. So take your dog for a walk, pet your cat, play with your hamster, just love your pets before you have to leave them.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.
