A Letter to the Struggling High School Seniors

Take my advice, I promise it's good.

To Seniors who can’t wait to get to college,

I am writing this in hopes that you will take my advice. Right about now, you should be picking out prom dresses, hoping that someone will prompose to you, and you are just waiting for graduation and the fun summer that is to follow. You are probably also going through some hard times, too. You are probably thinking that you cannot wait to pack up and leave home in a few months. I am going to tell you not to think like that.

Senior year should be the best time of your life. You are spending your final year with the people that have been by your side for four years; and in some cases twelve years. This is the time that you should be going to basketball games, parties, and any other events that your high school has. You shouldn’t be missing out because it’s a “stupid freshman thing,” or because you’re going through friendship/relationship problems.

Take my advice because I have been there. I let stupid things effect my senior year and I will always regret that. I should’ve spent every weekend with my friends and not worry about “why he hasn’t texted back,” or “how could she say that after everything we’ve been through.” I missed out on things I shouldn’t have and you shouldn’t do the same.

To anyone that thinks prom is stupid, go anyways. I promise that it will be worth it. Prom is the last time that your class will all be together before graduation. It will be a fun time.

Go to that game, even though your best friend can’t go. Stop worrying about what your mom said that made you mad and stop wanting to leave home so bad. You will not be saying that when you are finally gone.

For what is left of your senior year, make it awesome. Don’t let anyone ruin it and do things you never thought you would. Say hi to someone you don’t know, give advice to a freshman, be happy. Make your friends do new things, instead of the same old stuff. Go on a road trip, go hiking, get lost somewhere. Do things that you will always remember.

Make this a time you will not regret because soon it will all be gone. In a few months, you will see your classmates for the last time as you watch them take their diploma and disappear from your life. Make sure that they will always remember you and that you and them will always look back at your senior year and smile.

From, the girl who wishes she did the same

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.
