5 Reasons Why College Is Better Than High School

High school is an exciting time for most. You get some more responsibilities, pick and choose which classes you want to take for the first time, and get more freedom to be yourself. High school may be the best time of your life if you peaked in high school, but here are five reasons why college is better.

1. You're living on your own

When most people go to college, they end up in dorms or apartments, which is, in my opinion, one of the best parts of college. It's a way to express yourself with your own room. It also empowers you to take initiative and create your own schedule for activities such as sleeping and studying.

2. You meet new people

Yes, in high school you can meet new people, but for the most part, you're stuck with most of the kids you've gone to school with since kindergarten. In college, you get to go to a new city where you're surrounded by thousands of new people who's backgrounds, attitudes, and ideas differ from yours. Instead of constantly being with people who are most likely very similar to you, you get to branch out and learn about different cultures and ideas. You get the chance to become someone new and different than you were in high school without the pressure of everyone you know surrounding you. You can finally become yourself.

3. You have more freedom in your academics

Not only are you living on your own, which is an immense responsibility in itself, but you can also for the first time create your own academic path. You get to choose your major which in turn helps you choose classes. You can take whatever classes you want, whenever you want. Instead of being required to be at school from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m., you can decided to not have any classes before 10 a.m., or you can decide to bulk all of your classes in the morning. It's truly up to you for the first time in your whole life.

4. It's harder than high school

You may be thinking, "Madi, are you crazy? College being hard does not make it better than high school." Hear me out. For the first time ever, you're academically pushed to your limits. College is not a walk in the park like high school was. You're required to put in more time and effort than you probably have for anything else in your entire life. You get to learn more about yourself in that way. You find your limits, and then push them, making you grow in maturity and work ethic. College is not about being comfortable, and that's what makes it so amazing.

5. There's no more high school drama

In college, no one really cares or has time for the crap everyone put up with in high school. Most people are over it and ready to move onto bigger and better things. College is a time for people to chill out and not be as judgemental as they were. Everyone is starting over in this new place and everyone wants college to be awesome, not bogged down with petty drama.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
