High School Was Not The Best Years Of My Life, And You Can’t Change My Mind

High school will not be the best years of your life and I will fight you on this.

My high school was filled with being bullied, having very little friends, and toxic relationships. Everyone's magic answer to my issues? Join sports, get outside of your comfort zone, just TALK. Great. Thanks. You cured all my issues.. Not really. I tried sports - the coach showed favoritism to the prettier girls, the girls who were "friendly". I try going out of my comfort zone, I wore unique clothes. I got comments about how my clothes looked like the came out of the garbage. I tried to talk to people, I really did. All I got was weird looks and rude comments. I am a firm believer that if high school ends up being the best four years of your life, you peaked and now have nowhere to go but down.

People say you make all your best friends in high school... I talk to one, maybe two people. People say college cares about things in high school like National Honors Society and clubs, when in reality being in those things didn't benefit me in any way. People talk about finding your "high school sweetheart". All I found was low self esteem and trust issues. People talk about all the fun memories you'll make and all the laughs you'll have. My memories were reading books and listening to music.

Now, don't get me wrong. People can have a good time in high school. The two friends I did make are pretty great. And, I had some good teachers. But, for people to have the nerve to say it's going to be the best years of your life is beyond wild to me. How can anyone think that'll be better than college life? How can that be better than marrying the love of your life or having children (or pets if kids aren't your thing)? How can anyone look at life after they graduate and think "man, nothing can beat underage drinking and late night Walmart runs."?

I just can't comprehend people who think high school is as good as it gets. Mainly because everyone I know who says that still parties with high school kids four years after graduation. I guess what I really want to say is, it does get better. Everything after high school is better.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.

Cambio

Singing is something I do all day, every day. It doesn't matter where I am or who's around. If I feel like singing, I'm going to. It's probably annoying sometimes, but I don't care -- I love to sing! If I'm not singing, I'm probably humming, sometimes without even realizing it. So as someone who loves to sing, these are some of the feelings and thoughts I have probably almost every day.
