Things My High School Friends Taught Me

Thank you for everything.

Things My High School Friends Taught Me

There were rough patches throughout friendships in high school. Well, every friendship has a rough patch or two. I had some interesting friendships in high school, a few of my closest friends were a grade or two below me. My high school was small. Every one knew everything and every person, teachers and students knew each other outside of school not just in school, which makes for a lot of talk and everyone hearing everything. In high school, it could be the best four years of your life or the worst four years of your life. For me, it wasn't the worst, but i didn't like high school. Same faces every day, same drama every other week, same guys and girls, small towns just get old quick. Thankfully for me, I had some of the bestest friends anybody could ask for to deal with all the mess high school years throw at you.

So thank you to the girls that I fussed with, the girls I spent many nights with, the girls that I hardly ever talk to now that we have all moved on. Each of you taught me something whether you meant to or not.

I learned to not care what others think of me, because if I'm happy that's all that matters.

I learned boys suck during high school because they are still growing up, and take a long time doing so.

I learned not everyone is going to like you and there is not anything you can do about it.

I learned that chocolate and a movie night with a friend can fix anything, to a broken heart or failed test.

I learned there are friendships that aren't meant to last forever. Some people really are sent to you to teach you a lesson.

I learned who I really could trust, and who couldn't keep a secret to save their life.

I learned how to build trust after it's been broken.

I learned what not to say and what to say, and when to say it.

I learned how to speak my mind.

I learned how to not be sorry for how I really felt.

I also learned how to not burn up my hair anymore with a straightener.

I learned how to curl hair a hundred different ways.

I learned how to work with two day unwashed hair and make it look decent at 6 in the morning.

I learned which friends could get me out of class when I'm tired of just busy work.

I learned thousands of other things too through friendships and high school, but those are just a few that matter. So thanks to the ones who taught me lessons without noticing you were. Also, hope you all are doing well in life.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
