Most people can attest that love is blind.
Especially when we're young.
We fall head over heels for people, and it's OK to imagine happily ever afters with them.
It's important, though, to keep a level head and not be blinded into thinking this honeymoon phase will last forever.
High school kids are known for having especially long honeymoon phases.
We grow up surrounded by media that shows everyone meeting the love of their life at a young and bragging about being high school sweethearts. It's become the "ideal" love story and makes teenagers believe that'sexactly how it'll be for them.
Being in high school, you're young and naive. Most high school couples think they'll be together forever.
While it may be true for some, it is not for all.
Recently, on Twitter, a high school couple went viral for getting engaged while taking prom photos.
They were congratulated but met with a lot of backlash.
Both moms of the teens knew about the engagement and fully supported it. Amber, the girl from the video, says that their high school engagement is fine because they're almost graduated and plan to live together.
My response to that and every other high school couple with a similar mentality: Dating in high school and dating after high school are two different worlds.
When you graduate, relationships become much more than meeting up between classes and eating dinner with your boyfriend's family a couple times a week.
You grow up and have to learn how to blend the responsibilities of "adulting" with the responsibilities of a relationship,\ because, just like everything else outside of high school, it requires more work.
Just because some high school sweethearts get engaged after high school doesn't mean it's okay to do in high school.
Most high school sweethearts who get engaged wait at least a year after graduation to get engaged. Most of these couples understand they need to see that things can work for them outside of classrooms and hallways.
Some couples can be together for several years in high school but once they move on to college life, they break up.
Relationships in and out of high school are different.
Outside of high school, there are more milestones to a relationship. In high school, it's just figuring out if one month is too early to say the "L" word.
It's not just another step in a relationship that you do because you can. It's more than a step. It's a huge jump and shouldn't be done unless you are totally serious.
Engagements aren't just "I want to spend my life with you," it's "I want to have insurance, and bank, and file taxes, and make the lifelong, serious commitment with you." It's all the adult things you take on when you get married.
When you're in high school, you're still a kid.
It's not the right time in your life to be thinking about marriage. Things will change when you turn the tassel. It's better to wait and see what happens.
It's better to enjoy the little moments of dating before rushing to the next milestone.
Until the time comes to pop the big question, the only proposals you should worry about are promposals.
