12 Things You Miss About Being A High School Cheerleader
Antonia Leseth

As an old high school cheerleader, I can tell you right now that being apart of a pep squad was one of the best things I've ever done. There is nothing quite like standing front of your student body and supporting and cheering on your team together. Being a cheerleader taught me a lot about dedication, responsibility, and confidence. So here are 12 things every old cheerleader misses.

1. Always having something to do on a Friday night

You never had to make plans because you knew you'd be cheering on your favorite team from the sidelines. Whether it was football or basketball, you always had the best weekend plans.

2. Being flexible

Your legs we're basically like rubber from endless hours of stretching and practicing kick lines and you could contort your body into basically any shape.

3. Learning a hip hop routine

There is nothing more enjoyable than breaking it down for a pep rally. Hip hop practices were always the most exciting and probably the only time your whole team was paying attention.

4. Getting to throw people, and being thrown into the air

Stunting is by far one of the most impressive things cheerleaders do. Whether you were a base or a flyer you know that adrenaline rush of doing the impossible.

5. Tumbling

Getting to do a backflip made you feel like a ninja. It made all those times you completely fell on your face totally worth it

6. Bus rides to away games

Because every bus ride instantly turned into a crazy dance party (featuring a lot of Beyoncé).

7. Being weird with your team

There was always that one point in practice where no one could keep it together. Whether you made up weird cheers or funky dance moves, you'll always remember goofing off together.

8. Cheer camp

The worst, best, most sweaty, stressful, rewarding week of your life.

9. Picking out new uniforms

Getting to put on that new uniform is one of the most exciting parts of the year. Almost as exciting as getting a brand-new, crisp pair of pom-poms.

10. Bonding with the sports teams

Cheerleading got even better when you got to cheer for your best friends. The football and basketball boys always had your backs and they were so appreciative of your support.

11. Rushing the field

You know those last 20 seconds of a game you were clearly winning. Everyone lines up on the sidelines, revving up to go run onto the field. The rush of energy and excitement and the sprint you made after the clock finally ran out. Rushing the field is probably one of the few things movies actually got right about high school.

12. Cheering alongside some of your best friends

Being on a team with someone for four or so years really creates a strong bond. You spent most of your high school experience with your team. You literally depended on them for everything -- even to literally catch you when you fall. Your team will always have a special place in your heart.

Thank you to the JSerra Pep Squad for four amazing years.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
