A Letter To My Best Friends

High school may not have been the best years of our lives, but I met you guys, lifelong friends, thank you for everything.

A Letter To My Best Friends
Mary Kate Mullen

We've grown up together, from kindergarten to senior year; we walked the same halls, had the same teachers, and sat in the same chairs. Although we all became close at different times, we ended up as best-friends and I know you all will have my back for the rest of our lives. From bike rides, to driving cars, from homecoming to prom, and 8th grade moving up day to high school graduation and everyday in-between you were the ones I wanted by my side. We've grown up together, you guys have taught me so much. Even though I left for school and moved 2 hours away to Keuka College, I sure didn't miss a beat with you all. So this ones for you guys, thanks for being my best-friends.

You've shown me what I deserve, you tell things straight up and don't beat around the bush, but that's how it has to be. You have given me advice when I needed it the most, and an ear to talk to when I had no where else to turn. You have done things for me that others would have either thought twice about or would have turned their back right away. You have made me laugh when I needed it the most.

You know everything about me, from the way I order my food, my drink of choice, the outfit I'd actually be comfortable in, the face I make when I'm annoyed or probably any emotion for that matter, you know what I'm afraid of.

This summer we've gotten closer than ever; practically spending every night together between work and sports schedules. Doing random adventures, anything to have fun and spend time together before two of us head away for school and the closest we'll get to hanging out is texting how bad our day went or comparing our crazy assignments in our group message, and the only way I'll get to see your faces is Snapchat. Thank you for having fun with me and being down for whatever even if it's just watching a movie or sitting in the hot tub.

So to my high school best friends, thank you for everything, you all have a very special place in my heart. We started as friends and are becoming sisters, you all are the sisters I've never had, never leave me side. From worrying about me when I first went away to school because I never answered to laughing at me for the stupid decisions I make. You guys show me what good friends look like and I can honestly say I've never been closer to someone, you guys know me like the back of your hand and I wouldn't change a thing.

You made high school tolerable and you'll make the rest of my life enjoyable.

I love you Fab 5 or as they call us... Mom Squad

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
