Congratulations on completing high school and getting ready for the next step in your life ! This is more geared to people going to college, as this was my experience.

You did a lot in high school and that is great. I mean this with no offense, but many people in college do not care about everything you accomplished previously. This is a new slate, and I did my best to take advantage of it. For example, one of my regrets from high school was not getting involved soon enough. I remieded that in college from the start. Create a new profile for yourselves in all aspects and improve.

Some of you are enjoying your summers in your hometown before heading off to college in the fall, as some of you leave home for the first time for an extended period. Do not be scared, as the idea of having to learn a new town and make new friends is scary enough, along with tougher academics. Go out and be yourself, but most importantly- do not forget about your friends and family back home. Sadly, you will not maintain contact with many of your high school classmates, but do try to keep in touch to the best of your ability.

Finally, trust yourself and seek advice as you venture forth into this latest adventure. In words of one of my professors, pursue excellence !

I'll never forget the day that someone told me these words: "Madison, I think you're a good friend to everyone but yourself." I stood there completely in awe of that statement. Before that day, I never really thought about being a friend to myself, and at the time, I didn't really know what it meant. Now, I realize that you can't fully be there for other people unless you're there for yourself, too. You can't show up for others until you're willing to show up for yourself.

Here are five things everyone should learn in order to be a better friend to themselves. These steps are hard, but they're so worth it.
