Recently, I started watching this TV show called Timeless. The whole show is basically about these three people who are tasked with the mission to go back in time and stop this guy from ruining history.
(That's the best way that I could put it without giving away anything.)
Anyway, the fact that the main characters go back in time to specific points in history is why this show is so good. Sure, the whole plot of the show is dramatized and entirely fictional. That's expected of a TV show. That being said, the settings of each episode actually existed throughout history. Most of the characters that are introduced were real people. I say most because there are some characters that never actually existed-but you would only know that if you did a little bit of research on the side.
Timeless is one of those shows that makes you think. It's one of those shows that make you curious about people during parts of history that may or may not have really paid attention too. It does something that some history centered TV shows/movies have achieved and others have failed to do. It manages to bring the spotlight back on the subject and makes it interesting. I can even say as someone who loved history in school that I actually learned things about people from episodes of the show.
Of course, these history facts are only a third of what the show is about. The show also deals with the personal lives/backstories of the characters and the concept of time. The question of whether or things are actually meant to be. Is fate a real thing? Can you make a difference without completely destroying something else?
They are all very philosophical questions aren't they?
It made me think about how fragile our own line actually is. By line I guess I mean heritage, where we've come from. The people we have come from. How if something happened to just one person on our family tree, our whole lives could end up being completely different. Crazy to think about isn't it?
In the show they mention that one of the "rules" of time travel is that you can't travel back to a time where you already exist. For example, if you made some sort of mistake that ended up changing your life only one year ago-you can't go back and fix it.You could risk meeting yourself and thus mess up the delicate fabric of time. Then when you tried to travel back to present day, not all of you may come back. Think of it like how Ron Weasley got splinched in Harry Potter-only worse.
Timeless is a surprisingly good and one of the few shows that I actually watch consistently on cable. I would definitely recommend it because even know it has historical elements in it-they're not being shoved down the viewer's throat.
Wow I really hope that made sense......
