Growing up in Central Jersey (yes, there is a Central Jersey), I was able to experience all the fun that NJ has to offer without having to travel too far. New Jersey has some hidden gems that not many people know about. From restaurants to hiking trails to beahces, Jersey is an awesome place to explore.
1. Van Gogh's Ear Cafe, Union
From enjoying an exotic flavored latte like S'mores or Banana 'Nilla to trying your first vegan wrap, this cafe has it all. There's a giant mural of Van Gogh's infamous starry night that helps set the mood. Whether you're sitting at a candle lit table or lounging in an arm chair with a book, you'll be sure to hear the live music that plays there often.
2. Mount Tammany, Delaware Water Gap
A strenuous 3.5 mile hike up one of Jersey's most famous trails. This hike is rocky and may require hiking shoes...and a lot of water (maybe snacks too) but the view at the top is priceless. Once you reach the top you will see incredible views of the surrounding area, the Delaware River and other mountain ranges.
3. Chart House Restaurant, Weehawken
An upscale restaurant set right on the Hudson River overlooking the beautiful Manhattan skyline. This place specializes in seafood dining and originated on the West Coast. They cater to private events or for you and your significant other. Either way you are sure to have an incredible experience with good food and even better views,.
4. Sunset Beach, Cape May
If you're ever looking to watch the sun go down, Sunset Beach is your go to. Located on the southern tip of NJ in Cape May County, Sunset Beach has nightly ceremonies kicking off the sunset. In 1926, the US decided to purposely sink a concrete ship, the Atlantus, that was built for WWI to help build a ferry overpass near Cape May, NJ. Unfortunately there was a mishap and the boat ended up sinking at the wrong location, where it remains to this day.
5. Broad Street Dough Co., Oakhurst
If you like doughnuts and you haven't been here, you're missing out. With a plethora of flavors and combinations, it's hard to even pick what you want. This doughnut shop even offers "Vlugen" doughnuts, which are vegan and gluten free! The doughnuts are made and dipped fresh daily. They often have daily specials and will accommodate requests!
6. Cuban Pete's, Montclair
If you're ever looking for authentic and delicious cuban food, this is your place! Cuban Pete's offers indoor and outdoor seating with elaborate cuban decor surrounding and original Spanish music playing as you enjoy your meal. Whether you're enjoying plates of empanadas and freshly made sangria or a cuban sandwich with flan, you are sure to have a great dining experience here.
7. Cheesequake State Park, Old Bridge
A very family friendly area that includes hiking trails, camping, fishing, picnicking, kayaking, swimming and winter activities as well! This place offers views of salt-water marshes as well as the Pine Barrens making it the best of both worlds! This park is a great place to bring the whole family for a picnic or even your friends for a 3 miles hike!
I hope you enjoy these places as much as I do!
