Achieve Your Heroic Mind

"You have come together here, ailing as you are in mind and soul, for the treatment, the healing, the perfecting of your better nature." - Giambattista Vico

Recently I have been exposed to this new concept called the "heroic mind," which was brought to my attention in one of my communications classes. We were assigned to read this lengthy convocation speech made by a man named Giambattista Vico in the 1700's. I know it sounds incredibly boring, and yes it was written in that strange, complex older english that none of us like to read, but this speech happened to be extremely relevant to everyone in all aspects of life. Essentially Vico says that the heroic mind can obtained by anyone, but we must surpass our basic human capabilities and delve into the complexities of our mind. Since this was a convocation speech at the University of Naples that was directed toward incoming freshman to the university, Vico basis his speech around a university education. He says that if we as college students will simply attend all of our lectures and truly absorb the information being taught to us in every class then we can begin to embody the heroic mind. We should not be focusing on fame or fortune because that will come later in life if we gain all of the knowledge while we can. The heroic mind does not make us a different person, but more so perfects our being for the betterment of society.

Almost every important historical person like Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, Alexander Hamilton and hundreds of others embody the heroic mind. Anyone who can take all of the knowledge they have obtained throughout their academic career or in their day to day life and put it to beneficial use for our society has accomplished the heroic mind. After reading this speech, I have become completely motivated to sincerely learn in all of my classes rather than having closed off mind in my classes. Some of the most pointless classes college students must take are general education classes, but little do we recognize that these are come of the most beneficial courses to our common knowledge. We should always keep our minds open to all types of knowledge because you will never know what you need to use in the future, or even what could be a hidden specialty of ours. How will we truly know our passions if we do not try out a variety of subjects?

I want to challenge everyone out in the world to achieve this concept of a heroic mind. Rather you be a freshman in college, a grown adult with a family of five, or anyone at any place in your life because it is never to late to challenge our minds. You never know when humanity will come knocking at your door for your intelligence and services to fulfill your purpose in life. Strive to perfect beings so we can live for a bigger purpose than ourselves in this fascinating world.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
