Sony might be taking a risk with delivering us a "Spider-Man" movie based on a relatively new (2014), and quite frankly, bizarre comic series, but between reading more about the "Spider-Verse Lore," viewing the latest trailer, and finding out Nic Cage is the voice of one of the Spiders, I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.
Nonetheless, it's still a weird idea for a movie. I honestly thought it was a kids movie with the animation style and the appearance of "Spider-Ham," but upon reading more into it, I discovered the comic book spider-verse world is actually quite wild and dark. Although I'm still not sure how this is going to transfer onto a screen.
Quick noob breakdown of the "Spider-Verse" Marvel comics, TV shows, movies, and games are able to stay separate by having their charterers exist in different universes (which is why the Toby McGuire "Spider-Man" movies don't affect the current Marvel Cinematic Universe). Now, imagine taking the early comic book "Spider-Man," the Toby McGuire "Spider-Man," and the 2018 video game "Spider-Man" and pulling them out of their universe and putting them all into one. Then they all team up and fight. You can get the rest.
Anyway, the trailer offered us lots of goodies, specifically getting a closer look at (some of?) the variations of "Spider-Man" we'll be getting to watch. Reddit user, lordsmish, commented on a link to the new trailer with a list of the heroes and what universes they come from in the Marvel world. We'll go over these now:
1. Peter Parker, Spider-Man, Earth-616.
Peter Parker of Earth-616 is the classic Spider-Man. It was mentioned on Reddit that this might be Earth-96283 (the 2002 movie series) Spider-Man, but I doubt it with the confirmation of Spider-Qwen as the depth of the characters would be so much more.
2. Miles Morales, Spider-Man, Earth-1610.
Miles Morales, of Earth-1610, appears to me to be the main protagonist of this upcoming movie.
3. Peter Parker, The Spider-Man, Earth-90214.
Earth-90214's Peter Parker lives a darker, more violent version of Spider-Man who uses guns in a lethal manner. Nic Cage voices this one, that's all you should need to know about this film.
4. Gwendolyn Stacy, Spider-Gwen, Earth-65.
Although Peter Parker exists in this (Earth-65) universe, Qwen gets to be the masked webslinger. Another level of weird with this universe, Peter is Lizard, typically a rival of Spider-Man.
5. Peni Parker, SP//dr Mech Suit Pilot, Earth-14512.
In Peni Parker's Earth-14512 universe, her father dies while piloting the SP//dr Mech Suit. Her Uncle Ben and Aunt May inform her she's the only one who can continue his legacy and willingly gets bitten by a radioactive spider. Also, she's nine when this happens in her universe.
6. Peter Porker, Spider-Ham, Earth-8311.
Meet Peter Porker of Earth-8311... I think it would just be best to read the quick description from the Marvel wiki... "After dousing her head with water and activating the dryer, May Porker accidentally irradiated herself, and in a fit of delusion, bit Peter, who then found himself transformed into an anthropomorphic swine, much like May Porker herself. Running from the Porker homestead disoriented, Peter soon came to realize that he still retained a spider's abilities." Yeah...
