For those of you who have gotten lost in the summer and have not looked at a calendar for days—helpful hint: Father’s day is just around the corner! As we all scramble to get ready for this holiday and try to find gifts for the men that claim they have everything, it led me to think about my father and everything he does for me and my family.

Although my mom was the parent who primarily stayed home with us while we were younger, my dad’s impact is still never to be looked over. Just as being a mom is a difficult job, being a dad is too. Every time I pull into my garage, eat a snack, or even pack my bag for college, I am reminded of the numerous sacrifices my dad has made in order to provide for my family. My dad is one of the most hard-working people I have ever met in my entire life. He has dealt with tough clients, long hours, pesky details, and numerous other difficult tasks in the workplace; however, he has never complained or given up, instead, he has kept focused in his work with his main goal being to provide. Over the years my dad has done such a wonderful job providing for my family, we have everything we need and more all thanks to his hard work and sacrifices.

Even though my dad works many hard hours, he has never been one to shy away from his family. Despite whatever situation occurs at work, my dad always comes home with a smile on his face ready to tell us a funny new story and spend time with us. Despite the fact that my dad has a very intense work schedule, he has never missed an event for his daughters. My dad has been there for every play, every ceremony, and every accomplishment I have ever received or experienced. During every major event, I have been able to look into a crowd of people and see my dad’s proud smile, endlessly supporting me.

In addition to his hard work and devotion to my family, I thank my dad for always supporting me in whatever I do. I still remember to this day when I was determined that I would be an actress, any my dad took a whole 8 hour today to take me to an acting workshop. Even though my dad thought the program was a scam, which ended up being correct, he supported me through it anyways. In addition, although I was never a champion cross country runner, my dad always supported me to push my best and almost every meet I PR’d, he was always there cheering me on.

Adding on to his endless encouragement, my dad has encouraged me to work hard in everything I do purely by his own actions. As my dad has taught me that nothing in life is handed to you, and everything must be achieved with hard work. He has inspired me to hold a high work-ethic, and every time I feel like giving up, I always remind myself of the sacrifices my dad made to give me the opportunities I have, causing me to continue pressing forward.

Most importantly, I thank my dad for being himself. I thank him for all the laughs and jokes. I thank him for all the funny Youtube videos he shows us and for the way he pronounces Wiz Khalifa as Wise Kylift. I thank him for modeling what a loving, respectful, selfless man looks like.

I love you dad, thanks for all you do!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
