Like many other people in this day and age, I enjoy wasting my time by binge-watching T.V. shows on Netflix. I have shamefully watched more series than I would ever like to admit, but hey, that's life. I recently finished the CW series Gilmore Girls, and I have some mixed feelings about it, to say the least.
For the longest time, I could not get on any social media without seeing articles, posts, or pictures about Gilmore Girls. I hate being a "bandwagoner" so I thought to myself, "No way am I watching this show, everyone loves it." But of course, I did jump right on the wagon because the more I saw posts about it, the more interested I became in finding out what exactly the show was about. It was slow to start, but once I saw the incredible mother-daughter relationship that Lorelei and Rori had, I was hooked because I have that type of relationship with my own mother and there is nothing better than watching a relatable television show.
So there I was, half-way into season one of the show I told myself I would never watch, and I was hooked. I loved the way the mother and daughter were chatty and witty and of course the drama kept me hooked. I just wasn't quite sure how I felt about Rori Gilmore though. Throughout the whole series I waited for her character to develop but I don't think it ever happened. I found it hard to relate to a teenage girl whose rich grandparents paid her way through a private high school and an Ivy League college. She was super smart and read an almost inhumanly possible amount of books. I just felt like the character should have developed better, and I still don't see what the big deal about her is, but that may just be my unpopular opinion.
I did absolutely love Lorelei and Luke's relationship however. The best-friend-turned-lovers relationship is enough to make anyone's heart melt and I was no exception. One of the main reasons I continued watching the show was to see if Luke and Lorelei ended up together. I also thoroughly enjoyed Melissa McCarthy's character Sooki. Melissa McCarthy is one of my favorite actresses and it was very interesting to see her early work in Gilmore Girls.
In general, I loved the show and was honestly sad when it ended, like I am with most shows. It kept my interest and consumed most of my free time. I would most definitely recommend Gilmore Girls to anyone who is interested in a show with a strong female lead, witty humor and sarcasm, and a little bit of romance.
