Congratulations North Carolina. No, I really mean it. For the first time in 35 years, a special session of the NC legislature got together and within 10 hours managed to pass a bill. If for nothing else, I am impressed with how quickly you managed to rally together in order to pass legislation.
In an age where you cannot sit down and pass a budget or properly place district lines by deadlines, you have managed to pass a law in record time. Here's me applauding you.
Admittedly not me, but conveying the same sense of sarcasm.
I am done patting you on the back, and trust me, it will be the last time. What you, the elected officials of the NC Legislature, have shown me is that you are ignorant, bigoted and hypocritical. This truly shocks me.
This scares me.
Now, as a result of what you have done, this community of brothers, sisters, genderqueer, non-binary, trans, gay, lesbian and bisexual people, PEOPLE, are considered a second class citizen. All because you don't understand how bathrooms work.
You woke up one morning and saw that Charlotte, NC had passed an ordinance that banned discrimination and allowed people to use the bathroom of the gender which they identify and thought, "Nope, not gonna let that happen."
If a town had passed a law saying that on every Tuesday one person at random was going to be shot in the face, then you could step in, overturn it and ban other cities from it, but no, you stepped in when a town had passed a law saying that its citizens could be free to be themselves without worrying about the government stepping on their throats.
The two biggest arguments that you could come up with are that this was common sense and a protection for women.
Honestly, North Carolina Legislature, when have you ever truly cared about women? Was it when you voted for the Equal Rights Amendment? Was it when you voted to expand the funding of Planned Parenthood? Was it when you made it easier for women to get birth control? Was it when you decided to properly teach sexual education so that you could lessen the rates of unwanted pregnancy within the state? Was it when you made it state law that women should be held equally in the eyes of the law and not face any sort of discrimination and/or harassment?
Wait, I know the answers to all of the questions. You have never cared about women and there is a big fat NO to all the rest of the questions. You are only using women now as a scapegoat because you have no credible argument as to why North Carolina needed this law. This state was once thought of as the progressive jewel of the south, and now we are the laughing stock of the country.
I'm putting this up here instead of a picture of me flipping you off.
I just do not understand how you, the NC Legislature, can be so backwards. I do at least congratulate the Democrats in the NC Senate who walked out so that there would not be a vote. Unfortunately, this did not work because it was still passed 32-0.
To the Democrats in the General Assembly, the 11 of you that voted for this, need to be taken out to pasture.
Maybe you can tell the cows where they're supposed to shit.
So to all of my friends and family in the LGBT community, I am truly sorry. I stand with each and every one of you as we fight this. I will march with you. I will rally with you. I will do my best to bring as many people to fight with me as I can.
To all of the other people who will read this, please stand with those who are affected by this law. Vote against the bigotry. Let us put people in office who will work diligently to fight legislation like this.
Do not stand behind a party whose best excuse for something like this is common sense or women's protection. I'm sure the Nazis thought it was common sense to round people up and throw them into concentration camps.
Lastly, to all of the people who agree with this law and hate what you are reading in this article, I have no respect for you anymore. I will not waste my time trying to be concerned with your life if you have no concern for the well-being of your neighbors and fellow citizens.
I pray that you never have to deal with the discrimination and hatred that has been forced upon my community.
