Here's To The Guy That Became My Brother

Like it is for most people, family is a very important aspect of my life. I love my parents, little sister, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. They have all taught and shaped me into the person I am today. Even though I had older cousins, and a baby sister, growing up, I always wanted my own older brother. I was jealous of my friends who had them. They would always complain about how "smelly" or "dumb" they were. I would just wish for someone who I could joke with, who would beat up the bad guys and teach me everything I needed to know about having a brother.

Don’t get me wrong, I love my baby sister! We have a bond like you wouldn’t believe. I would be willing to lay down my life for her. And God bless the person whoever hurts her, because they are going to have to deal with me.

When I came to college, it was like Christmas. I gained many older and younger sisters throughout all of the organizations I became a part of. I loved it! I joined a sorority, I made friends within my major, and of course, I can’t forget one of my best sisters, who happened to lived right across the hall from me.

But I still had a void; I was still looking for that one guy who I could call bro. Then, like some sort of miracle, he just showed up one day.

Actually, that’s not what happened at all.

When I first met him, I thought over and over again, “What is this guy's problem? My best friend is dating this guy? Oh Lord, help her!”

But then, the unthinkable happened; this guy cracked a joke. He turned out to be a really funny guy. When he made that dumb, corny joke, I knew he was one of the good ones. I mean, I am the “jokester queen” after all. Trust me, you can figure out a lot about a person’s character by what kind of jokes they tell.

The three of us hung out. We went to a football game, watched movies and got dinner a few times. Within that week, I had never seen my best friend so happy before. I cannot thank my big brother enough for what he does for her and how happy he makes her because she really is awesome and deserves the world.

Sadly, he had to go back home. A few weeks later, the unthinkable happened. He decided to transfer out here and I couldn’t have been more excited! For the time in my life, I knew I was going to have a brother.

According to Facebook, we have been friends for over a year now. In this year, we have had many shenanigans and adventures.

One time, they both decided to come home with me for spring break. My parents loved them, and they instantly became a part of my family. I mean seriously, sometimes my parents will call me just to see how their two “California kids” are doing. (Okay, Mom and Dad. You're cool! Love you too!)

My big brother has done so much for me, which I’m sure he doesn’t even realize.

He was the guy who introduced me to the Fast and Furious series, which I’m still currently addicted too. He showed me that even though doing doughnuts in a parking lot is not safe (granted, it was empty), it is super fun! He has offered to beat up the guys that have broken my heart and he protects me from the overly drunken guys at parties. But the most important thing he has done for me is make my best friend happy.

They say you find your best friends in college, I didn’t find that. I found another sister and my first brother.

Love you, bro!

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
