Here's To Summer 2016

Not going to lie, I’m ready for it to be over…

Here's To Summer 2016
SJU

Summer 2016 is coming to an end! For some of us, it has been our longest summer break ever. It’s been filled with friends, family, vacation, and of course work. If you’re anything like me, I’m sure you spent many days working in order to make up for all of the money you spent during your first year of college. Besides working, hopefully you’ve been lucky enough to have down time to create some great memories. Something about living at home for the first time in a year brought a great deal of excitement. You’re back to sleeping in your own bed and staying in it all day if you wanted. You’re back to showering without shower shoes. You’re back to home-cooked meals from your parents. You’re back to suffocating your dog in snuggles. And you’re back to spending time with your friends in your hometown doing the stupid things you did before all of you went to college.

But now summer is winding down and we’re starting to get a bit homesick…from campus. If at this point you aren’t dying to go back to school, did you really pick the right school? Sure I will be crying and wishing it was still summer when I get an absurd amount of assignments dumped on me all at once. But still, after four months of no school-related responsibilities, even I feel ready to get back to dealing with schoolwork.

Aside from the heavy course load, the main reason we are all dying to go back is so we can be back with our friends. The separation is a struggle and the idea that there is one week holding you back from seeing everyone is a tease. You’re ready to be living in your own apartment with your best friends. You’re ready to begin a second year knowing you already have your core friend group established. You’re ready for all the fun and memories that you’ll be creating. There’s so much to look forward to as college sophomores and the excitement to get back and live the year makes us wish summer would just end now.

We also can’t forget one important factor of returning back to campus. I hope you’re just as excited as me… returning back to campus means it will soon be the return of Fall aka the best season EVER. Campus will be beautiful with the multicolored leaves and crisp fall air. Nothing beats this beautiful season that is associated with the return of the school year. So here I am with a week left of summer. A week left to enjoy my pool and get tan with the company of my friends. But I can’t help but want to be back at my beautiful campus with friends that have already practically turned to family. I’m ready to get back to my home away from home.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
