While I had high hopes for "Hereditary," the new horror flick did not quite live up to my expectations or its various reviews. Toni Collette, who was my main motivation for seeing the film, gave a stunning performance as always, however, the plot was a little shaky, especially toward the end.
Hereditary is eerie and thrilling, but ultimately leaves too many seemingly important details unexplained. The significance of Charlie's role in the Satanic ritual is pretty vague and the ending is just truly bizarre, varying greatly from the structure of the rest of the film.
The final treehouse scene is more representative of an art house film compared to the typical ghost story the film sets itself up to be. With so much unclear and unexplained, I can only wonder if a sequel is in the works, or perhaps a prequel to give the origin story of Ellen and her involvement with Satanism.
"Hereditary" lives up to typical horror movie standards, which is pretty decent of course, but I was hoping for an ending that was perhaps a little less vague.
With all that said, Toni Collette is phenomenal and horror fans should still go see the film.
