7 Ways You Know A New Semester Is Upon Us

Well, it's that time of the year again, the start of school. If you're at a new school or just have new classes, most of you will recognize the symptoms of a new start of the semester.

1. Holding your class schedule in front of you like a Freshman

Even if you're a senior or junior, the same thing always remains the same. With a new semester comes a new class schedule. If you've been at your school for a while and know where most everything is, the fact still remains, for the first few days you're holding your schedule in the front of your nose after almost every class.

2. The influx of new students

With the beginning of the semester comes the greatest amount of students you'll be around for most of the semester. With the lines stretching almost all the way out of the union at lunch and nightmarish parking, you can definitely tell that school is back in session.

3. Syllabus week

Most professors spend most of the first class going over the syllabus, which a lot of the class won't read. Even if your professor is that one that assigns homework with five minutes left in the first day, they will always spend almost an hour going over the syllabus.

4. Your crazy group of friends is finally back together again

If we're honest with ourselves, many of us have a group of friends that are far from sane. People who don't know our group look at us as if we're insane and walk to the other side of the sidewalk. We don't care, mainly because we're to busy being insane to notice.

5. You're back in your favorite professor's class, and your least favorite

There's always one professor we all love and the one we just want to retire. Most of the time we have the one we don't like almost every semester. Having that class with your favorite professor makes up for it and keep you mostly sane.

6. You say goodbye to your friends that live in the library

We all know people who are on first name basis or face to desk basis with the library. The only time you really see them is when you brave the shelves to study yourself, or you've been sent in to ferret them out to see the light of day again.

7. Your social life grinds to a halt when the semester starts again

Even with the first weekend of the new year, comes a new set of projects, exams, and tests, and every year they seem to start earlier and earlier. It's something you can't avoid and just have to live with it and roll with the punches, even if they start coming after two days of class.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
