The debate over which Disney movie trumps all has been happening for nearly a century. The Disney Princesses are tough to beat, and classics like "Lady and the Tramp", "The Aristocats", "Peter Pan" and "Alice in Wonderland" will always be #1 in our hearts, but we all know there's only one movie that tops everything else: "Hercules".
Go ahead, take a second and flip some tables or curse at your screen...done? Good. Moving on, there are lots of reasons to back up this claim. "Hercules" is the ultimate story of self-discovery and becoming your own hero while being one to those around you. Sure, the stories starring heroines and women who "don't need no man" are current and appealing in modern day, but let's throw it back to 1997 and discuss why Hercules is the only man we've ever needed in our lives.
Whether you agree now or later, there's really no denying that "Hercules" melts your heart. The story is riveting, charming, and exciting from start to finish. Here's why "Hercules" is absolutely the most underrated Disney animated movie:
1. "Hercules" is very accurate to Greek Mythology
Personally, I love Greek Mythology. After taking classes with a heavy focus on origin stories and Gods and Goddesses, I found a whole new appreciation for this film. Do some research of your own to see it for yourself!
2. "Go the Distance" is the greatest male ballad in all of Disney history
We believe in you, Hercules! Also, that key change at the end? It gets me every single time.
3. Hercules is genuinely a nice guy
Sure, he may be a bit awkward at first, but this guy has aspirations to be a hero. We can't blame him for trying!
4. His transformation from Hercules to Hunkules is magnificent
Even as a child, I was definitely crushing on the new and improved Herc.
5. Hercules' relationship with Pegasus is to die for
6. Hades is easily the funniest Disney villain
He's the antagonist AND provides comedic relief? He wins.
7. Speaking of funny characters, let's talk about how awesome Meg is through the whole movie
She's sassy, confident, and doesn't give a damn about being some "damsel in distress".
8. Also, look at how GORGEOUS this woman is
Seriously, she looks like a Goddess (ha).
9. "I Won't Say I'm in Love" is a bop
This song alone has had me contemplating my love life since I was a kid. Preach it, Meg!
10. While we're on the subject of powerhouse women, The Muses are iconic in the world of Disney
Have you ever encountered a more talented, fierce collection of women? Me neither.
11. For real, they're incredible, and I can't get over them
They're the ultimate narrators and musical icons. I bow down to these women!
12. Despite the high energy and catchy music, "Hercules" isn't a typical, cutsie Disney movie
Steering away from the typical romance story that Disney tends to gravitate towards was necessary and refreshing. Heavy subjects like abusive relationships and identity issues are covered from start to finish. Good on you, Disney!
13. We can't forget how awesome Phil was in helping Herc overcome his obstacles, though
We all need a mentor like Phil, honestly.
14. "Hercules" also introduced one of Disney's very first easter eggs!
Easter eggs are like little shout-outs to other Disney films, often including a snippet of another movie's character. Here we see Scar from "The Lion King" fulfilling his own prophecy from another Disney universe.
15. When Hercules saves Meg from the Under World, we definitely all cried a little bit
Not only did everyone learn he's a demigod, but he put Hades to shame and saved his damsel in distress. Hercules, you're the man.
16. In the end, Hercules wins it all (including the girl!)
Don't worry, I'm crying, too. Every Disney movie needs it's happily ever after, and we lucked out with an action-thriller-romantic-comedy all in one!
17. Chance the Rapper also loves this movie and is wanting what we all want...a sequel!
Of course, this isn't very likely, but we can all hope for something wonderful like this in the future.Whether you agree or disagree that "Hercules" is the most underrated Disney animated movie, it will forever be a classic and one we all grew up loving at one time or another. Who knows, maybe the rumors of a live-action film in the next couple of years are true. *wink wink*
