Leading up to a new year, most people are scrambling to think of a New Year’s resolution. As I have noticed, most people who are actually thinking of a New Year’s resolution are thinking of changes that they want to make on themselves. For example, many people think of losing weight, eating healthier, or being a better person.

But how come people’s New Year’s resolution is almost never for the community? Don’t we all want to live in the best town that we can? If you are someone who is looking for a New Year’s resolution that would make a great impact then you should really consider giving back to the community. But remember it does not have to be the New Year for you to start giving back to your community. You can start giving back any day.

There are many different ways that people can give back to the community. Since there are a lot of people that want new and better sports fields and equipment, a great way to help out the sports team is by sponsoring them. Sponsoring a sports team is helping out the community, and a great way to help certain sports team eventually receive newer and better equipment that will benefit them.

Another great way to help out the community is by volunteering your time. There are many great ways that you can volunteer your time to better certain parts of your community. One place that you can volunteer your time that will benefit a lot of different people is at your local school. You can volunteer your time by helping in the classroom, attend school board meetings, or you can volunteer to help chaperone for school events or field trips.

There are also a lot of different ways you can volunteer at your local YMCA. You could show off what you know and your talents by volunteering to teach a class, coach a sports team, or help out at one of their sporting events. A once a year volunteer act through the YMCA would be to work at the cruise dinner, or you could volunteer by helping out in the office.

Another way someone can help out in their community is by donating. You can donate to an organization like Love Inc. so that people who are in need of coats for the winter, or simply just a pair of shoes to wear, have them. Also, you could donate to your local school or local charity.

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.
