How Helping Others Can Be Helping Yourself

How Helping Others Can Be Helping Yourself

"He teaches us that the most esteemed men and women are not the self-congratulatory leaders of society but are instead the humblest of servants."

As a leader in society, this speaks beyond what a simple quote usually does. It allows you to think not only about yourself but others around you and how they are acting. Did I help someone in need today, Did I hold a door for someone else, Lend a helping hand to the new person at work? These are things that fall under the category of "simple acts of kindness" which at the time, it might not seem like much of anything. However, in their eyes, it was the world.

This sends me back to when I went to go get lunch from Chipotle a few years back, I was on crutches trying to crutch out with a bag of food; when I looked outside it had begun pouring rain. This, of course, put me into a pretty frustrated mood because I could fall and I was already struggling as is; out of nowhere a nice gentleman comes and puts an umbrella over my head and walks to the car with me until I was dry and simply walked away. I, of course, shouted "thank you" a bazillion times (yes, that's a word). After I had gotten safely inside, I had thought to myself how that simple act of kindness meant more than he might ever know.

This situation was more than two years ago and in a different city. But I remember each second of it like it happened just yesterday. Now we get back into the point, this man did something incredible and expected nothing in return. He did it out of the grace, and kindness of his heart which truly shows the gratitude of his attitude. The bible teaches us to share the love, and generosity to others with a humble heart, and this is what is missing. Nine out of 10 cases, we expect something whether it is good grace, applause, a gift back or a favor down the road. When in all reality we should do this because we want to help others not to receive anything back.

So, I encourage you to make this change this year, spread the love by giving random acts of kindness to others with a humble heart, and positive reasoning behind it. Never be afraid to have gratitude behind your attitude; because in all reality "doing something positive toward another person is a practical approach to feeling good about yourself."

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
