Helpful Tips For Studying Abroad

Study abroad is a fabulous experience for any college student. Wherever you go, enjoy the culture, the food, the city and the people. The world is your oyster for the semester(s), live it and love it!

Here are some helpful tips that you absolutely need as you prepare for your semester abroad. Whether you go in the spring, fall or the summer semester you are bound to have an amazing time. Bon voyage!

    1. Make sure your credit card and debit cards have the new chip technology.

Not all stores in the U.S. have made the transfer to the chip, but in Europe most of the stores have.

    2. Get multiple credit cards in case one gets stolen, you lose it or doesn’t work in the country.

This way you have other methods of paying for food and essentials.

3.Make sure you have some cash on you at all times.

If you end up needing to take a taxi back to your apartment or you miss your train.

    4. Get a portable charger.

You never know when you will run out of battery, and miss an opportunity to take a picture of an incredible view.

    5. Ask your bank if they have a sister bank in the country you are going to.

This will help avoid some of the international charges when withdrawing money from an ATM.

    6. Look at a map of the city that you are staying in.

This will be helpful when you get there, so you are able to navigate the city; but don’t be afraid to get lost and explore.

    7. Be aware of your surroundings at all times.

Pick-pockets are everywhere in major cities throughout the world.

    8. If you are carrying large amounts of money or multiple credit cards, put them different places in your purse/bag.

In case a pick-pocketer does get your wallet, it won’t be all of your money/credit cards.

    9. Get a cell phone or SIM card while studying abroad.

Either get a pay as you go cell phone or SIM card to put into your existing cell phone in case of an emergency. It always good to have one if you were to ever be in a dangerous situation for safety measures.

    10. Be prepared for all sorts of weather conditions.

Pack clothes that can be easily layered; sweaters, jackets and t-shirts are great for traveling abroad.

    11. Ask about student discounts.

If you have a student visa some museums and exhibits are free or at a discounted cost, so don't be afraid to ask and make sure you bring your passport with you.

    12. Always leave room for dessert!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. "Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
